Carroll is a small town located in Chautauqua County, New York, in the United States. In 2020, about 3,456 people lived here. The town got its name from Charles Carroll, who was an important person who signed the Declaration of Independence.
Carroll is in the very southeast part of Chautauqua County. It is also southeast of the city of Jamestown.

History of Carroll Town
People started settling in the Carroll area around 1809. The town of Carroll was officially created in 1825. It was formed from a part of another town called Ellicott. James Hall was chosen as its very first leader, called a Supervisor.
Later, in 1853, a section of Carroll was used to create a new town called Kiantone. By the year 1900, the town of Carroll had a population of 1,684 people.
Geography and Location
Carroll is about 86.4 square kilometers (or 33.34 square miles) in total area. Only a tiny part of this area is water. The town has a stream called Conewango Creek that flows through it. This creek eventually leads to the Allegheny River.
The southern border of Carroll is also the state line with Pennsylvania. This means if you go south from Carroll, you'll be in Pennsylvania!
U.S. Route 62, a major road, goes through the northwestern part of the town.

Carroll is surrounded by several other towns and areas:
- The town of Poland is to the north.
- To the west, you'll find the towns of Kiantone and Ellicott.
- The town of South Valley is to the east. This town is in Cattaraugus County.

Carroll is home to several smaller communities and important locations:
- Conewango Creek – This stream forms part of the western border of the town. It flows past the community of Frewsburg.
- Dodge – A small village, or hamlet, in the southeast part of the town. It's named after an early family who lived there and is just north of the Pennsylvania border.
- Fentonville – Another hamlet located in the southwest corner of the town, along County Road 53.
- Frewsburg – This is the largest community in Carroll. It's a hamlet and a census-designated place near the western town line.
- Ivory – A hamlet found east of Frewsburg, along County Road 36.
Famous People from Carroll
Some notable people have connections to the town of Carroll:
- Robert H. Jackson – A very important person who served as a Justice of the Supreme Court and was also the chief U.S. prosecutor at the Nuremberg Trials after World War II.
- Shane Conlan – A talented football player! In 2019, he was voted the best high school player in Western New York while playing for Frewsburg Central School. After high school, Shane played for Penn State, where his team won two championships in 1982 and 1986. He was the very first player chosen by the Buffalo Bills in the 1987 NFL Draft. Shane played for the Bills from 1987 to 1992, helping them reach the Super Bowl three times. He also played for the Los Angeles/St. Louis Rams before retiring in 1995.
- Reuben Fenton – He was a supervisor for the town of Carroll. Later, Fenton became a U.S. Congressman and even served as the Governor of New York from 1865 to 1868. After that, he became a U.S. Senator from 1869 to 1875.
