Ellicott is a small town located in Chautauqua County, New York, United States. In 2020, about 8,771 people lived there. The town is named after Joseph Ellicott, who worked for a company called the Holland Land Company.
Ellicott is found in the middle of Chautauqua County. It sits on the eastern side of Chautauqua Lake. The town also surrounds the city of Jamestown on its east, north, and west sides.

Exploring Ellicott's Past
The first people to settle in the area arrived around 1806. The town of Ellicott was officially created in 1812. It was formed from a part of the town of Pomfret. Ellicott was one of the very first three towns in Chautauqua County.
Over time, parts of Ellicott were used to create other towns. These included Busti (in 1823), Carroll (in 1825), and Poland (also in 1825). Later, some land was given back to Ellicott from Busti and Carroll. The city of Jamestown was also formed from a part of Ellicott in 1886.
Ellicott's Location and Landscape
Ellicott covers a total area of about 78.9 square kilometers (30.47 square miles). Most of this area is land. Only a tiny part, about 0.06 square kilometers (0.02 square miles), is water.
The town is right next to the eastern end of Chautauqua Lake. This large lake is a key natural feature of the area.
Roads and Travel in Ellicott
Several important roads run through Ellicott. The Southern Tier Expressway, which includes Interstate 86 and New York State Route 17, passes through the northern part of the town. You can get on or off this expressway at exits 11, 12, and 13.
New York State Route 60 is a main road that goes from north to south. New York State Route 394 is another important road that runs east to west. It is found in the southeastern part of the town. New York State Route 430 also enters Jamestown from the southwest part of Ellicott.

Based on the 2000 census, there were 9,280 people living in Ellicott. These people made up 3,818 households and 2,596 families. The population density was about 304.4 people per square mile.
Most of the people in Ellicott were White (97.69%). There were also smaller groups of African American, Native American, and Asian residents. About 1.05% of the population identified as Hispanic or Latino.
In terms of age, 23.2% of the population was under 18 years old. About 20% of the people were 65 years or older. The average age in the town was 42 years. For every 100 females, there were about 92.1 males.
The average income for a household in Ellicott was $39,333. For families, the average income was $47,813. About 8.8% of all people in the town lived below the poverty line. This included 14.1% of those under 18.
Places and Neighborhoods in Ellicott
Ellicott is home to several communities and specific locations:
- Bonita – A neighborhood within Fluvanna, located on the north side of Chautauqua Lake. It is northwest of Jamestown.
- Cassadaga Creek – A stream that flows south through the town. It is a branch of Conewango Creek.
- Celoron – A small village on the south side of Chautauqua Lake. It is near the western edge of the town.
- Chadakoin River – A stream that flows through Jamestown. It connects to Cassadaga Creek and is the outlet for Chautauqua Lake.
- Chautauqua County Airport/Jamestown (JHW) – The county airport. It offers scheduled flights and services for general aviation. It is northwest of the city.
- Elmhurst – Another neighborhood in Fluvanna. It is on the north side of Chautauqua Lake, northwest of Jamestown.
- Falconer – A village located east of Jamestown. It is on the eastern side of the town.
- Fluvanna – A small hamlet on the north side of Chautauqua Lake. It is northwest of Jamestown and sits on the town line between Ellicott and Ellery.
- Jamestown – The city of Jamestown is surrounded by the town of Ellicott on three sides.
- Kimball Stand – A location on the northern town line, found on NY Route 60.
- Levant – A hamlet on the eastern town line, north of Falconer. It is on NY Route 394 and County Road 65.
- Longview – A place on the south side of Chautauqua Lake, west of Celoron.
- Ross Mills – A hamlet north of Falconer, located on NY Route 380.
- West Ellicott – A hamlet on the western side of the town. It stretches from the city of Jamestown to the town of Busti. The U.S. Census Bureau calls this place "Jamestown West."
Ellicott in Pop Culture
Ellicott was once featured in an episode of the TV show The X-Files, called "Alone". In the episode, you could clearly see trucks and police cars with "Chautauqua Coroner" and "County of Chautauqua Sheriff" written on them. The Sheriff cars looked exactly like the real ones used by the Chautauqua County Sheriff.
