Castelsarrasin (Occitan: Los Sarrasins) is a town in the Tarn-et-Garonne area of France. It is part of the Occitanie region. Castelsarrasin is the second-largest town in Tarn-et-Garonne by population, after Montauban.
It is a "subprefecture" in the department. This means it is an important administrative center. It is also the main town of the Castelsarrasin arrondissement, which is like a district.

History of Castelsarrasin
The first time Castelsarrasin was written about was in the year 961. It was called Castel Sarracenum. This name was found in the will of Raymond II of Rouergue. He gave the Saint-Sauveur church to the monastery of Moissac.
The name Castel Sarracenum means "Saracen Castle". It got this name because a castle was built there during the Saracen era.
Early Conflicts and Wars
Castelsarrasin faced many wars in its early days.
- It fought against the English until the late 1100s.
- The Albigensian Crusade happened in the early 1200s. This was a war against a religious group in southern France.
- In 1320, during the Shepherd's Crusade, many Jewish people living in the city faced violence.
Later, the Hundred Years' War affected the area. This was a long conflict between France and England. Most people in Castelsarrasin were Catholic. However, many Protestants lived nearby. This led to fights between these groups during the French Wars of Religion in the 1500s.
The region became more peaceful in the centuries that followed. This calm period lasted until the French Revolution began.
Changes in Administration
From 1790 to 1795, Castelsarrasin was the main town of the Castelsarrasin District. This district was in the Haute-Garonne department. In 1808, the Tarn-et-Garonne department was created. The arrondissement of Castelsarrasin then became part of this new department.

Castelsarrasin is located near the Garonne river. This river flows through the southwest part of the town. The town is about 21 km (13 mi) west of Montauban. Montauban is the main city of the Tarn-et-Garonne department.
The town covers an area of 76.77 km2 (29.64 sq mi). Its average height above sea level is 79 m (259 ft). At the town hall, the height is 81 m (266 ft).
