Clash Royale is a mobile game where you use strategy in real-time. It mixes ideas from card games, online battle arenas, and tower defense. Players fight against each other to knock down their opponent's towers. At the same time, they must protect their own towers.

The main way to play is in 1-on-1 matches. Here, players earn trophies and move through different themed arenas. As you go up, you unlock new cards and game features. If you get enough trophies, you can join ranked play. This has seven levels, like Master I, Champion, and Ultimate Champion.

Understanding Battles

Battles happen in an arena. Each player has three towers: one King Tower and two Princess Towers. A river splits the arena into two sides. Bridges on each side create paths for your attacks. You use a deck of eight cards. Four cards are always ready in your hand.

You play cards by spending "elixir." This is a special energy that slowly refills up to 10 points. Cards can be troops, buildings, or spells. Troops usually march towards enemy towers. Some attack other troops first, while others go straight for the tower. Princess Towers shoot at enemies that cross the river. The King Tower joins the fight if a Princess Tower is destroyed or if it gets hurt.

You can place buildings and spells to defend your area. They can also damage enemy units and structures. Most troops and buildings can only be placed on your side of the arena. But spells can be used anywhere. If you destroy an enemy tower, you can then place cards further into their side.

Battles usually last up to three minutes. In the last minute, elixir refills twice as fast. You win by destroying the enemy's King Tower. Or, you win by destroying more towers than your opponent when time runs out. If both players have the same number of towers, the game goes into "overtime." The first player to destroy any tower wins. If no one destroys a tower in two minutes of overtime, a tiebreaker happens. The player whose tower has the lowest health loses. In the last minute of overtime, elixir refills three times faster!

Building Your Card Deck

Choosing your cards is a big part of your strategy in Clash Royale. Between battles, you pick eight cards from your collection to make your deck. You can get new cards from chests you win. You can also buy them in the game's shop. Or, you can join a clan and ask other members for cards.

You can upgrade your cards using in-game money. This makes them stronger. Upgrading cards also helps your "King Level" go up. Your King Level makes your towers stronger too. Higher-level cards are more powerful. But you also need to think about how your cards work together. Good battle strategy means using your elixir wisely. It also means placing cards at the right time and in the right spots. And try to guess what cards your opponent might play next!

Explore Different Game Modes

Supercell has added many other ways to play Clash Royale over time. There's a 2v2 mode where you can team up with friends or other players online. The game also has challenges and events that last for a short time or are always there. These often need a small entry fee in game money. You get rewards based on how many wins you get before losing three times.

One fun challenge is the "draft challenge." Here, you pick cards from two choices to build your deck before each battle. Other events celebrate new cards or features.

"Clan Wars" started in April 2018. In this mode, players worked together in a clan to fight other clans. This was updated to "Clan Wars 2" in August 2020. In Clan Wars 2, players make four different decks with no repeated cards. They use these decks to attack other clans' defenses.

"Merge Tactics" became a permanent game mode in July 2025. This mode is for four players and takes turns. Players choose units to place and combine them to make them stronger. Then, these units go into automatic battles. It's a bit like the game Rush Royale.

Clash Royale often has special limited-time game modes. For example, in March 2018, for the game's second birthday, Retro Royale was added. This mode only let players use cards that were available when the game first started. It came back in March 2025, but this time it only used cards released up to 2017. In June 2024, a mode replaced the King Tower with a Goblin Queen. When you played goblin cards, her power grew. Then she would release many Goblin Babies onto the enemy's side! Ranked 2v2 play was a limited-time mode in November 2024 and again in February 2025. It let players team up and play against other teams in a competitive way.

How Clash Royale Was Made

Clash Royale was created by Supercell. This is a game company from Finland. They are famous for other mobile games like Clash of Clans, Hay Day, and Boom Beach. The idea for Clash Royale came from an earlier game idea called The Summoners. That game was stopped because it was hard to make a real-time player-versus-player (PvP) game for phones.

Work on Clash Royale started in 2014. At first, it had its own fantasy world. But later, it was set in the same world as Clash of Clans.

Clash of Clans was mostly made for bigger tablet screens. But Clash Royale was designed for mobile phones. It was one of the first games where players could fight each other in real-time on a phone.

Clash Royale was first released in a few countries, like Canada and Australia, on January 4, 2016, for iOS phones. It came out for Android phones in those same countries on February 16, 2016. The game was then released all over the world for both types of phones on March 2, 2016. It also became available for computers worldwide on October 22, 2023. This happened when Google Play Games started its PC beta.

When it first came out, Clash Royale was the most downloaded and highest-earning app on the U.S. iOS App Store.

Clash Royale has big tournaments where the best players compete. These events are called esports.

The Clash Royale League

The Clash Royale League was a major team esports world championship created by Supercell. It had five leagues for different regions: North America, Europe, Latin America, Asia, and China. The first season began on August 20, 2018. After many games, the best teams went to the World Finals in Tokyo, Japan. Nova Esports won the 2018 World Championship.

In 2019, Team Liquid won the world title. In 2020, most teams had to play from home because of the pandemic. After 2020, the league changed from team battles to individual player competitions. The 2021 World Finals was held online.

The World Finals from 2022 to 2024 took place in Helsinki, Finland. This is where Supercell's main office is. In 2024, Supercell held a big event called Superfest. It included the Clash Royale World Finals along with other game tournaments.
