History of Cornelius

People have lived in the area around Cornelius since at least the 1750s. A place called Potts Plantation was started here in 1753. It's now a historic site.

The town of Cornelius was officially started in 1893. However, it wasn't made an official town until March 4, 1905. Many historians say the town began because of a disagreement over how cotton was weighed.

Cornelius has grown a lot since the year 2000. In 1990, fewer than 2,600 people lived here. By 2020, the population had grown to over 31,000! This shows how popular the town has become.

Geography of Cornelius

Cornelius is found along Lake Norman in northern Mecklenburg County. The town is about 20 miles (32 km) north of Charlotte. It sits at an elevation of 742 feet (226 meters) above sea level.

The town covers about 12.1 square miles (31.3 square kilometers). Most of this area is land, with a small part being water from the lake. Cornelius is one of three towns in Mecklenburg County located north of Charlotte. The other two towns are Davidson and Huntersville. All three towns serve as suburbs for Charlotte.
