Cottage Grove is a city in Washington County, Minnesota. It is about 10 miles (16 km) south of Saint Paul. The city is located on the north bank of the Mississippi River. It is also near where the Mississippi River meets the St. Croix River.
Cottage Grove is part of the larger Minneapolis-Saint Paul area. This area is one of the biggest in the United States, with about 3.69 million people. In 2020, Cottage Grove had a population of 38,839.
The city is connected by U.S. Highways 10 and 61. This makes it easy to travel to nearby cities like Saint Paul and Bloomington. Long ago, Cottage Grove was a farming area known for its wheat and first creameries. Today, a company called 3M has had a production facility here since 1947.

History of Cottage Grove
Cottage Grove was officially planned out in 1871. Several important historical places in the city are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. These include:
- The Schilling Archeological District, which shows signs of people living there long before European settlers arrived.
- The 1850 Grey Cloud Lime Kiln, used to make lime.
- The 1871 John P. Furber House.
- The 1917 Cordenio Severance House.
Geography and Location
Cottage Grove is located about 11 miles (18 km) southeast of St. Paul. You can reach it using U.S. Highway 61 and Interstate 494.
The city has a total area of about 37.48 square miles (97.07 km²). Most of this is land (33.62 sq mi or 87.08 km²), and a smaller part is water (3.86 sq mi or 10.00 km²).
Cottage Grove has more land along the Mississippi River than any other city in Minnesota. It shares borders with:
- Woodbury to the north.
- Hastings to the south.
- St. Paul Park to the west.
- Newport to the northwest.
- Denmark Township to the east.
The city is also about a 30-minute drive from the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport. The southeastern part of Cottage Grove is only five miles (8 km) from the Wisconsin border.

Annual Events
Cottage Grove hosts an exciting annual event called the Strawberry Fest. Thousands of people come together to celebrate. This festival usually happens in the second week of June at Kingston Park.
