Dakota is a small city in Winona County, Minnesota, United States. In 2020, about 295 people lived there.
This city is located between two bigger cities: Winona and La Crosse. It sits right along Interstate 90, which is a major highway. Other important roads like U.S. Highways 61 and 14 also pass through Dakota for a short distance. You can also drive on Winona County Road 12, which is known as the Apple Blossom Scenic Drive.

Where is Dakota Located?
Dakota is a small city with a total area of about 0.55 square miles (1.43 square kilometers). Most of this area is land.
The city is right next to the famous Mississippi River. A smaller stream called Dakota Creek also joins the Mississippi River here. Some nearby towns and places include Winona, Dresbach, Nodine, La Crescent, La Crosse, Onalaska, and the beautiful Great River Bluffs State Park. Dakota is about 18 miles south of Winona and 11 miles north of La Crosse.
A Look at Dakota's History
Dakota officially became a city on May 23, 1951. However, its beginnings go back much further. The area was first planned out in 1855 and started to grow in 1859. A man named Nathan Brown, who came to Minnesota in 1847, helped develop the area. He owned a stockyard and even ran a ferry service across the river to Wisconsin.
Long ago, Dakota was famous for growing berries. Today, the main type of farming in the area is growing apples.

Getting Around
The Empire Builder train, run by Amtrak, travels through Dakota. This train connects cities like Seattle and Portland to Chicago. However, the train does not stop in Dakota. The closest train station is about 10 miles away in La Crosse.
