Dinnington is a town in South Yorkshire, England. It's part of the Metropolitan Borough of Rotherham. Dinnington is located near the towns of Worksop and Rotherham, and the cities of Sheffield and Doncaster.

Historically, Dinnington was part of the West Riding of Yorkshire. Today, it's the main town in the civil parish of Dinnington St John's. This parish also includes the small villages of Throapham and St John's. In 2011, the population of Dinnington St John's was 9,077. The town is about 100 metres (330 feet) above sea level.

History of Dinnington

Early Times and Farming Life

People have lived in Dinnington since at least the Neolithic period, which was a very long time ago. Some people think the town's name comes from an old burial mound, but a more common idea is that "Dinnington" means "Dunn's Farmstead" or "Town of Dunn's People."

Originally, Dinnington was a small, quiet farming village. It was quite isolated. Over time, quarrying (digging for stone) in the area helped the population grow.

The Coal Mining Era

The biggest change for Dinnington happened in 1905 when the Dinnington Main Colliery (a coal mine) was opened. This led to a huge increase in the town's population. For example, between 1901 and 1911, the number of people living in the parish jumped from 250 to 5,000! By 1951, the population was over 7,000.

At first, many coal miners lived in simple, temporary homes in a place called Laughton Common. People called this "Tin Town." Later, they moved into houses built by the mining company near the main shopping area.

Dinnington was an old parish that became a civil parish in 1866. In 1954, it joined with another parish to form Dinnington St John's.

Growth and Challenges

Dinnington continued to grow throughout the 20th century. Many people moved there to live and travel to work in bigger cities like Sheffield, Rotherham, and Worksop. This is called "commuter living." As new housing estates were built, Dinnington started to blend into nearby areas like Throapham and North Anston.

However, the closure of the Dinnington Colliery in 1992 was a very difficult time for the town. Many jobs were lost, and local businesses were affected. This caused a rapid decline in the area during the late 1980s and early 1990s. Even though the town has grown steadily since then, it faced high unemployment for a while.

In 2003, Dinnington was officially declared a "town." This was done to try and attract more businesses and improve the local economy.

Community Spirit and Local Issues

In 1995, a TV show called Everyman featured Dinnington. The episode, "Simon's Cross," showed how the community of Dinnington supported their parish priest, Rev Simon Bailey, as he faced a serious illness.

There was also some discussion in the town about the future of the Miners' Welfare buildings and sports fields. These facilities were originally provided for the miners in 1926. Local residents wanted to see the site improved and used for the community again.
