List of Gravity Falls episodes

"Dreamscaperers" is an exciting episode from the first season of the popular animated show Gravity Falls. This episode is the first part of the two-part season finale. The second part is called "Gideon Rises". It first aired on July 12, 2013, on the Disney Channel. The story was written by the show's creator, Alex Hirsch, along with Matt Chapman and Tim McKeon. Joe Pitt and John Aoshima directed the episode. This episode is super important because it's the very first time we meet Bill Cipher, who becomes the main bad guy of the series!

The show is about twin siblings, Dipper and Mabel. They spend their summer with their great uncle, Grunkle Stan. Stan runs a strange tourist trap called the Mystery Shack in the fictional town of Gravity Falls, Oregon. In "Dreamscaperers," Stan's enemy, Gideon (voiced by Thurop Van Orman), tries to break into the Mystery Shack. He wants to steal the deed to the property from Stan's safe. Grunkle Stan stops him and kicks him out.

Gideon then decides to get help from a powerful demon named Bill Cipher (voiced by Alex Hirsch). Gideon asks Bill to go into Stan's mind. His goal is to find the secret combination to the safe. Dipper Pines (Jason Ritter), with his sister Mabel (Kristen Schaal), and their friend Soos, also go into Stan's mind. They want to stop Bill from finding the combination. This episode was watched by 2.7 million people when it first aired. Many TV critics gave it good reviews.

What Happens in the Episode?

Dipper and Mabel are talking about how much Grunkle Stan's business rival, Gideon Gleeful, causes trouble. Suddenly, they hear someone breaking into the Mystery Shack. They find Gideon trying to open Stan's safe. He wants to steal the property deed inside. They confront Gideon. He doesn't take Stan seriously at first. But he runs away when Stan hits him with a broom!

After Gideon leaves, the Pines family, along with Wendy and Soos, sit down to watch TV. Soos then finds a bat flying in the kitchen. Stan tells Dipper to take care of it. This makes Dipper feel like his uncle doesn't like him. He thinks Stan always makes him do the hardest chores.

Gideon Summons Bill Cipher

Meanwhile, Gideon goes into the Gravity Falls woods. He performs a special ritual to summon the evil and powerful Bill Cipher. Bill agrees to enter Stan's mind for Gideon. But Bill makes sure Gideon will also help him with another secret project later. Mabel and Soos overhear their plans. They quickly tell Dipper what's happening.

Dipper looks in his mysterious Journal "3." This is one of three books found in Gravity Falls. These books hold the supernatural secrets of the area. Dipper learns about Bill's dangers and powers. After seeing Bill start to invade Stan's mind, Dipper, Mabel, and Soos perform a ritual from the journal. They follow Bill into Stan's mind.

Inside Stan's Mind

They find Bill, who seems to have been waiting for them. Bill tells them they shouldn't be in Stan's memories with him. He also does funny things, like pulling movie characters (Xyler and Craz) out of Mabel's thoughts. These characters follow them for the rest of the episode. The group enters a strange version of the Mystery Shack inside Stan's mind. All of Stan's memories are kept there.

While they search for the safe combination, Bill disguises himself as Soos. He then follows them. Dipper looks through Stan's memories. He finds a memory of Stan talking to Soos about his own life as a weak child. Dipper thinks Stan was talking about him. Angry at his uncle, Dipper doesn't want to help save him anymore and leaves.

Stopping Bill and Gideon's Plan

Mabel finds the memory of the safe combination. Bill then reveals himself, steals the combination, and runs away. Mabel, Soos, Xyler, and Craz chase after him. Meanwhile, Dipper accidentally sees the same memory again. He realizes he made a mistake. He understands that Stan was actually sharing his true feelings with Dipper. After watching the rest of the memory, Dipper learns that Stan is tough on him to prepare him for the "real world." The imaginary Stan tells Dipper that in the mindscape, you can do anything you can imagine.

Mabel and Soos had already found Bill. He is torturing them by making their worst nightmares come true. Dipper quickly arrives with the news that they can make dreams real. He shows his sister by using laser vision! Using their imagination, they almost defeat Bill. Bill decides to give up and leaves Stan's mind. Seconds after Dipper, Mabel, and Soos return from Stan's mind, they find out Gideon broke in again. This time, he successfully stole the deed! He simply used dynamite to blast the safe open, so he didn't need the combination. The episode ends with the Mystery Shack being destroyed.

How the Episode Was Made

BrothersChaps
Matt Chapman (left) from The Brothers Chaps helped write this episode.

The episode "Dreamscaperers" was written by Timothy "Tim" McKeon and Matthew "Matt" Chapman. The story idea came from the show's creator, Alexander "Alex" Hirsch. Matt Braly and David Gemmill created the storyboards. Joe Pitt and John Aoshima directed the episode. John Aoshima and Matt Braly have worked with Hirsch since the very first pilot episode of the show.

"Dreamscaperers" was the first time the main bad guy, Bill Cipher, appeared. However, pictures of him are shown throughout the season before this episode. When Bill is summoned, he shows many images on his body. These include John F. Kennedy, UFOs, the Aztec calendar stone, the Apollo moon landing, Stonehenge, the Giza pyramids, and crop circles. This continues the show's fun way of making fun of conspiracy theories. The characters Xyler and Craz from the fake movie "Dream Boys High" are based on 1980s cartoons and teen films made in the United States.

The actors in this episode included the regular cast. Jason Ritter played Dipper Pines. Kristen Schaal was Mabel Pines. Alex Hirsch voiced Stan Pines, Soos, and the new character Bill Cipher. Thurop Van Orman played Lil' Gideon. Other voices included Linda Cardellini as Wendy, Greg Cipes as Craz, John Roberts as Xyler, Jennifer Coolidge as Lazy Susan, Grey DeLisle as Carla McCorkle, Kevin Michael Richardson as Sheriff Blubs, and Stephen Root as Bud Gleeful.
