The Duke of Gloucester and Edinburgh was a special title in British history. It was given to a royal family member, usually a prince. This title combined two important places: Gloucester in England and Edinburgh in Scotland. It was part of the Peerage of Great Britain, which is a system of noble titles.

This dukedom was created for Prince William Henry. He was the brother of King George III. Before this, there were separate titles like Duke of Gloucester and Duke of Edinburgh. But when those titles ended, the king decided to combine them into one new dukedom.

When Prince William Henry held the title, it was considered a royal dukedom. This meant he could use the special style "His Royal Highness." His son, Prince William Frederick, also held the title. However, he only received the "His Royal Highness" style later, when he got married in 1816.

After the Union of Great Britain, kings from the Hanoverian family often gave out double titles. These titles usually included one name from England and one from Scotland. This was a way to show the unity of the two countries.
