What is Ebenezer Like?

Ebenezer is bordered by the Bremer River to the north-west. A railway line, called the Yarrowlea-Jeebropilly railway line, runs along its north-east side. Even though it's called the Ebenezer railway station, it's actually in the next-door area, Jeebropilly.

In the western part of Ebenezer, there used to be a coal mine. This mine is now closed.

Lagoons and Waterholes

Ebenezer has some interesting water features:

  • Geiger Lagoon is a lake that was created from an old open-cut mine site. The mine closed in 2001. This lagoon is named after the Geiger family, who were some of the first settlers in the area back in 1857.
  • Keanes Lagoon is another waterhole in Ebenezer. It is named after John Richard Keane, who owned the land nearby.

Most of the land in Ebenezer is used for homes in the countryside. People also use the land for grazing animals, like cows, on the natural plants.

Early School Days

The first school in the area was called Seven Mile Creek State School. It opened a long time ago, on 2 November 1868. Later, in 1888, its name was changed to Ebenezer State School. This school helped educate children in the area for many years before it closed in 1957.

The Church and Its Name

The name Ebenezer comes from a church. The Ebenezer Wesleyan Church opened on Sunday, 23 April 1871. The word Ebenezer comes from a Hebrew word that means rock of faith. This church was an important part of the community for many years. It was located across the road from the old school. The church building is no longer there, but its name lives on in the area.
