History of Elbert County

How Elbert County Was Formed

Elbert County was created a long time ago, on February 2, 1874. It was made from the eastern parts of Douglas County. Just a few days later, on February 6, 1874, the county got even bigger. It took in a piece of northern Greenwood County when that county was dissolved.

Who Elbert County Is Named After

The county was named after a very important person, Samuel Hitt Elbert. He was the Governor of the Territory of Colorado when Elbert County was first formed.

Changes to Elbert County's Size

In 1889, Elbert County became its current size. Some of its eastern parts were used to create three new counties: Lincoln, Kit Carson, and Cheyenne counties.
