About Elliott Hall of Music
The Elliott Hall of Music is a popular place for many different events. It hosts performing arts shows like national Broadway tours. You can also see famous musical artists, comedians, dance groups, and orchestras here. Many important speakers have given talks at the hall too.
History of the Hall
The hall was designed by Walter Scholer. Another architect, J. André Fouilhoux, who helped design Radio City Music Hall, also assisted. Construction started in October 1938. The building was finished on May 2, 1940. It cost about $1.2 million to build. The hall first opened on May 3, 1940, and was called the "Purdue Hall of Music." In 1958, it was renamed to honor Edward C. Elliott.
How the Hall is Connected
The Elliott Hall of Music is connected to Hovde Hall. Hovde Hall is Purdue University's main administration building. A walkway on the second floor links the two buildings. This connection was a smart idea when the hall was built. It allowed the Hall of Music to use Hovde Hall's fancy entrance. This saved money and space during the Great Depression.
Using the Hall for Events
The hall is used for many important university events. During spring commencement exercises, students walk from Hovde Hall through the walkway into the Hall of Music for their ceremony. For winter graduations, students enter through a different door behind the stage. This entrance is closer to where students gather before the ceremony.
Locally, people often call the building "Elliott Hall" or "the Hall of Music." It is also used for large exams. Many students can take tests there at once. For example, about 3,000 students can take an exam at the same time.
Offices and Studios Inside
Elliott Hall of Music is home to several offices. It houses Purdue Convocations, which plans many of the events. The studios for the radio stations WBAA and WBAA-FM are also located here. Hall of Music Productions is another department in the building. They manage the hall and its ticket office. They also help with production services for events across the Purdue campus.
