Eric Dier (born 15 January 1994) is an English professional footballer. He plays as a centre-back or defensive midfielder. Currently, he plays for the French club Monaco.
Eric grew up in Portugal. He started his football journey in the youth teams at Sporting CP. He made his first team appearances in 2012. In 2014, he moved to Tottenham Hotspur in England. He played for Tottenham for ten years. He appeared in important matches like the 2015 Football League Cup final and the 2019 UEFA Champions League final.
In January 2024, Eric joined Bayern Munich on loan. He later made this move permanent. He won the Bundesliga title with Bayern in his second season. Even though Portugal was interested, Eric chose to play for England. He first played for the senior team in 2015. He was part of England's squads for UEFA Euro 2016 and the 2018 and 2022 FIFA World Cups.
Growing Up and Family Life
Eric Dier was born in Cheltenham, England. His father, Jeremy, was a professional tennis player. Eric's grandfather, Ted Croker, was a former secretary of The Football Association (FA). His great-uncle, Peter Croker, also played professional football.
In 2001, when Eric was seven, his family moved to Portugal. They lived in Lagos for a year. There, he briefly played for a local youth team. Then they moved to Lisbon. Eric's mother got a job working for UEFA Euro 2004. Eric joined Sporting CP's youth academy. In 2010, his parents moved back to England. Eric stayed in Portugal at Sporting CP's academy.
Football Journey
Starting Out in Portugal
Eric's talent was noticed by his P.E. teacher in Lisbon. This led to a trial at Sporting CP when he was eight. He signed a professional contract with Sporting CP in 2010. Big clubs like Arsenal and Manchester United were also interested.
In 2011, Eric went on loan to Everton in England. This was to help him develop in a more competitive league. He played ten times for Everton's Under-18 team. He even won the U18 Premier League with them. Eric found it a bit hard to settle back in England. But he extended his loan for another year.
Making a Name at Sporting
Eric made his debut for Sporting B in August 2012. He scored his first goal for them in November 2012. It was a great free kick goal.
Soon after, he was called up to the main Sporting CP team. He made his debut in November 2012. He even helped set up the winning goal in that match. A few days later, he scored his first goal for Sporting's senior team.
Time at Tottenham Hotspur

In August 2014, Eric joined Tottenham Hotspur. He signed a five-year contract. He had an amazing start, scoring the winning goal in his very first game. Just eight days later, he scored again in his first home game. In March 2015, he played in the League Cup Final at Wembley, but Tottenham lost to Chelsea.
In 2015, Eric signed a new contract. He became a key player as a defensive midfielder. He played alongside Mousa Dembélé. Tottenham challenged for the Premier League title that season. He scored important goals against Stoke City and Manchester City.
Eric signed another new contract in 2016. He often played as a centre-back that season. This was due to new players and injuries in the team. He also made his UEFA Champions League debut. In October 2016, he was the captain for Tottenham for the first time.
In the 2018–19 season, Eric scored his first goal in 18 months. This helped Tottenham have a great start to the season. He had surgery for appendicitis in December 2018. He was later fined £40,000 and banned for four games by the FA. In July 2020, he signed an improved contract with Tottenham.
Moving to Bayern Munich
On 11 January 2024, Eric joined Bayern Munich in Germany. He went on a six-month loan. This move reunited him with his former Tottenham teammate Harry Kane. Eric made his debut for Bayern on 24 January 2024.
By March 2024, Eric had played enough games to make his move to Bayern permanent. He signed a one-year deal. He formed a strong defensive partnership with Matthijs de Ligt. This helped Bayern do well in the Champions League. In April 2025, he scored his first goal for Bayern in a Champions League match. Ten days later, he scored his first Bundesliga goal. On 10 May 2025, Eric celebrated his first major title. Bayern Munich won the Bundesliga championship.
Joining Monaco
On 14 May 2025, the French club Monaco announced that Eric would join them. He signed a three-year deal, starting from 1 July 2025.
Playing for England
Youth Teams
The Portuguese Football Federation wanted Eric to play for Portugal. But he chose to represent England. He was called up to the England U18 squad in November 2011. He played the full match in a 1–1 draw.
In May 2013, he was picked for the 2013 FIFA U-20 World Cup squad. He made his debut in a warm-up match against Uruguay. Eric also played for the England U21s. He debuted in a big 6–0 win against Scotland in August 2013. In 2014, he told his U21 manager he wanted to focus on playing centre-back.
Senior Team
In November 2015, Eric was called up to the England senior team. He made his debut against Spain. He came on as a substitute with his Tottenham teammate Dele Alli. He made his first start against France a few days later. On 26 March 2016, he scored his first international goal. It was the winning goal against Germany in Berlin.
Eric was chosen for UEFA Euro 2016 in France. In England's first match against Russia, he scored with a direct free-kick. On 10 November 2017, Eric captained the England team for the first time. This was in a friendly match against Germany.
He was part of the 23-man squad for the 2018 FIFA World Cup. He captained the team in a group match against Belgium. Eric scored the winning penalty in the shootout against Colombia. This gave England their first ever World Cup shootout victory.
In September 2022, Eric was called up to the England squad again. This was for UEFA Nations League matches. A month later, he was included in the squad for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.
