FK Yenisey Krasnoyarsk is a professional football club from the city of Krasnoyarsk in Krasnoyarsk Krai, Russia. They play in the Russian First League, which is one of the top football leagues in the country. The club is named after the mighty Yenisei River, which flows through Krasnoyarsk.

The Club's Journey: A Look at Yenisey's History

The club has a long history, starting way back in 1937. It was first known as Lokomotiv Krasnoyarsk. Over the years, the club changed its name several times. It was called Rassvet in 1968, then Avtomobilist in 1970. In 1991, it became Metallurg.

In 2010, the name changed to Metallurg-Yenisey. Finally, in 2011, the club became known as Yenisey. This name honors the famous river in their home city.

Climbing the Ranks: Yenisey's League Adventures

For many years, Yenisey and its earlier versions played in lower divisions. They never reached the top Soviet or Russian leagues until 2018. Their best result in the Soviet era was finishing 2nd in their group in 1959.

In recent Russian football history, they achieved 3rd place in the Russian National Football League (FNL) in both the 2016–17 and 2017–18 seasons. The FNL is the second-highest league in Russia.

In the 2015–16 season, Yenisey almost got relegated from the FNL. However, another team couldn't afford to be promoted, so Yenisey got to stay. This was a lucky break for them!

Reaching the Top: Promotion to the Premier League

At the end of the 2016–17 season, Yenisey had a chance to move up to the Russian Premier League. This is the highest football league in Russia. They played in special matches called "promotion play-offs" but lost closely to FC Arsenal Tula.

The next season, 2017–18, was amazing! Yenisey finished 3rd in the FNL again. They entered the promotion play-offs once more. This time, they won against FC Anzhi Makhachkala with a total score of 6–4 over two games. This victory meant they were promoted to the Russian Premier League for the very first time in the club's history!

They played one season in the Premier League (2018–19) but were then relegated back to the second tier. In the 2022–23 season, Yenisey finished 4th in the First League and again qualified for the promotion play-offs. However, they lost to Fakel Voronezh and remained in the First League.
