Fazeley is a town in Staffordshire, England. It is located south of Tamworth. Fazeley is known for its history and canals. The area includes Mile Oak and Bonehill. It is part of the larger Tamworth built-up area.

The town is built around the meeting point of two canals. These are the Birmingham and Fazeley Canal and the Coventry Canal. At Fazeley Junction, you can see old multi-storey mills. Fazeley is also next to Drayton Manor. This was once the home of Robert Peel. Today, it is a popular theme park and zoo.

Fazeley's Past: A Look at History

How Fazeley Got Its Name

The name Fazeley has been found in old papers since 1135. Experts think it comes from early Saxon words. Most believe it means "pasture land" or "pleasant pasture." Another idea is that it comes from "faresleia." This Anglo-Saxon word meant "bulls' pasture." The flat land near the River Tame would have been perfect for this.

Bonehill and Sir Robert Peel

The small area of Bonehill grew to support Bonehill House. This was the home of Sir Robert Peel, a famous Member of Parliament. Bonehill first had farm buildings. It also had facilities for breeding horses. These helped with the Peel family's interests.

The Victoria Memorial Hall: Fazeley Town Hall

The building now called Fazeley Town Hall was first named the Victoria Memorial Hall. It was built to celebrate Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee. James Eadie, a brewer, paid for its construction. He also bought the land for it. The hall was finished in 1898.

Eadie wanted the hall to help the people of Fazeley. He hoped it would improve their lives. His plan was for the hall to host public meetings, talks, and concerts. He also wanted it to have reading rooms. He even thought about holding classes there. These classes would help workers learn new skills.

His ideas came true. Many different meetings took place there. Winter shows were always popular. The hall had a library and a reading room. Classes were held for gymnastics and cooking. An evening school for gardening attracted over 40 young people. Later, silent movies were even shown there.

Fazeley Festival

The first yearly Fazeley Festival happened on September 15, 2007. It included the Mile Oak Mile Charity hop.

Getting Around: Transport in Fazeley

Ancient Roads and Modern Routes

Fazeley is located on the old Roman road called Watling Street. This road is now much quieter. The main A5 road was moved to a new path. This new path runs between Fazeley and Tamworth. The old Watling Street is now called the B5404.

Fazeley Bridge

Fazeley Bridge crosses the River Tame. It separates Two Gates from Fazeley. The River Tame here is the border between Lichfield and Tamworth districts. It used to be the border between Staffordshire and Warwickshire. The bridge was built in 1796. It replaced an older bridge that was destroyed by floods. It is a Grade II listed building. This means it is a special historic building. It has three arches made of cut stone.

Train and Bus Services

Before 1904, Wilnecote Station was known as Wilnecote and Fazeley. This station is in nearby Two Gates. Today, Fazeley has a regular bus service. The Arriva bus service 110 goes from Tamworth to Birmingham.
