Every year since 1946, a company called Gallup asks people in the United States a special question. They want to know which man and woman "living today in any part of the world" Americans admire the most. This is called an opinion poll. The results are then shared as a list of the top ten most admired people.

Most of the time, the person who is the President at the time is chosen as the most admired man. And usually, the First Lady is picked as the most admired woman. This poll helps us see who Americans look up to each year.

How the Most Admired Poll Works

Gallup's poll asks people directly who they admire most. They don't give any names to choose from. This means people have to think of someone on their own. The poll has been done almost every year since 1946.

Most Admired Men

The current president has been the most admired man in 58 out of 72 polls. Two presidents, Dwight D. Eisenhower and Barack Obama, have each been named the most admired man 12 times.

A religious leader named Billy Graham appeared on the top-ten list 61 times. This is more than anyone else! Other men who appeared many times include Ronald Reagan (31 times) and Jimmy Carter (28 times). The Pope, who is the head of the Catholic Church, has been in the top ten every year since 1977.

Sometimes, people who are not presidents or famous leaders also appear on the list. For example, in 1958, Governor Orval Faubus was on the list. This was after a big event about civil rights in Arkansas. Some people even choose a friend or family member instead of a public figure.

Most Admired Women

Two former First Ladies have been named the most admired woman the most times: Eleanor Roosevelt and Hillary Clinton.

Eleanor Roosevelt was a very important person in the 1940s and 1950s. She worked as an ambassador for the United Nations. She helped write the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which is a very important document about human rights for everyone. People often called her the "First Lady of the World." She was named the most admired woman 13 times.

Hillary Clinton was the First Lady from 1993 to 2001. She also became a senator for New York and the Secretary of State. In 2016, she was the first woman from a major American political party to run for president. Hillary Clinton was at the top of the list 22 times between 1993 and 2017. She was the most admired woman for 16 years in a row! After her, Michelle Obama became the most admired woman in 2018.

Queen Elizabeth II has appeared in the top ten list 52 times. A famous TV host, Oprah Winfrey, has been in the top ten 33 times, even though she never won first place.

Ties in the Poll

Sometimes, two people tie for the most admired spot.

The poll was not done in 1976, 2021, and 2022. Also, in 1946 and 1947, they just asked for the "most admired person" instead of separating men and women. In 1967, they didn't ask for the "most admired woman."
