Giannis Sina Ugo Antetokounmpo (born December 6, 1994) is a Greek and Nigerian professional basketball player. He plays for the Milwaukee Bucks in the National Basketball Association (NBA). People often call him the "Greek Freak" because of his amazing size, speed, and strength. Many think he is one of the best basketball players ever.

Giannis was born and grew up in Athens, Greece. His parents were from Nigeria. He started playing basketball for youth teams in Athens. In 2011, he joined the senior team of Filathlitikos. He then entered the 2013 NBA draft and was picked 15th by the Bucks. In the 2016–17 season, he led his team in points, rebounds, assists, steals, and blocks. He was the first NBA player to be in the top 20 for all five of these stats. He also won the Most Improved Player award in 2017. Giannis has been chosen for the All-Star team nine times. He was even an All-Star captain in 2019, 2020, 2023, and 2024.

Giannis is one of the most awarded players in NBA history. He won the NBA Most Valuable Player Award two years in a row, in 2019 and 2020. Only Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and LeBron James have won two MVP awards before turning 26. In 2020, he also won the NBA Defensive Player of the Year award. This made him only the third player ever to win both MVP and Defensive Player of the Year in the same season. The others were Michael Jordan (1988) and Hakeem Olajuwon (1994). In 2021, Giannis led the Bucks to their first NBA championship since 1971. He was named Finals MVP for his incredible performance. That same year, he was honored as one of the league's greatest players by being named to the NBA 75th Anniversary Team. A movie about his life, Rise, came out in 2022. In 2024, he helped the Bucks win the NBA Cup and was named the NBA Cup MVP.

Because of his amazing sports achievements, the Greek Olympic Committee chose him to carry the flag for Greece at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris. He shared this honor with Greek race walker Antigoni Drisbioti.

Early Life and Family

Giannis Sina Ugo Adetokunbo was born in Athens, Greece, on December 6, 1994. His parents were immigrants from Nigeria. His father was a soccer player, and his mother was a high jumper in Nigeria. Three years before Giannis was born, his parents moved from Lagos. They left their first son, Francis, with his grandparents.

Giannis grew up in the Sepolia neighborhood of Athens. His family was mostly Nigerian. His parents struggled to find work because they were immigrants without work permits. So, Giannis and his older brother Thanasis helped by selling watches, bags, and sunglasses on the streets. Giannis started playing basketball in 2007.

Even though Giannis and three of his four brothers were born in Greece, they did not automatically become Greek citizens. Greek law follows jus sanguinis, which means citizenship is based on parents' nationality. Growing up, Giannis sometimes felt like an outsider. He didn't fully fit in with either the Greek or Nigerian communities in Athens. For his first 18 years, he couldn't travel outside Greece because he had no official papers. He finally became a Greek citizen on May 9, 2013. This was less than two months before the 2013 NBA draft.

After becoming a Greek citizen, his official last name became Antetokounmpo. This is the Greek way of writing his parents' original Nigerian name, Adetokunbo. Giannis is a Greek version of "John." Because his last name was hard for many NBA fans to say, he became known as the "Greek Freak." Giannis also has Nigerian citizenship, which he got in 2015. He has said that he feels both Greek and Nigerian.

How Giannis Plays

Antetokounmpo during the 2022 NBA All-Star Game

Giannis is 6 feet 11 inches (2.11 m) tall and weighs 242 pounds (110 kg). He is listed as a forward but can play all five positions. He is very athletic and can do many things on the court. Many people call him "positionless" because he's so good at everything.

Offense

Giannis is known for driving to the basket very well. He can cross half the court in just one dribble and get past many defenders. He has a special move called the Euro step that helps him attack the basket from far away.

However, some people have said that Giannis needs to improve his jump shot. He has only shot above 31% from three-point range once in his career. Other teams have used this to their advantage. For example, the Toronto Raptors built a "wall" of defenders to stop him from scoring close to the basket in 2019. After that, Giannis started shooting more three-pointers.

Giannis is also great at passing the ball. Even though he's not always the main ball handler, he helps set up many plays for his team. In the 2019–20 season, he was involved in 57.8% of the points the Bucks scored when he was on the court. He averaged almost 6 assists per game in the 2018–19 and 2019–20 seasons.

Defense

Giannis is also an excellent defensive player. He can guard players in all five positions. He often plays a "free safety" role, which means he can move around to block shots and stop attacks near the basket. He is very good at blocking shots, especially when opponents are running fast breaks.

With Giannis leading the defense, the Bucks have become one of the best defensive teams in the NBA. He won the 2020 NBA Defensive Player of the Year award. He is often chosen for the NBA All-Defensive Team.
