A Look Back: Greensboro's History
Greensboro was officially started in 1781. It was named after Timothy Green, who was one of the first people to own land there. But he never actually visited the town. His land was later sold because taxes weren't paid. Most of the first landowners were just buying land to sell it later, not to live there.
Early Roads and Settlement
Two important roads helped Greensboro grow. The Bayley Hazen Military Road was built before the town even started. It passed near Caspian Lake. In 1779, a wooden fort called a blockhouse was built there. This spot is now known as Block House Hill.
In 1781, a group of four people at the blockhouse were attacked by Abenaki people. Two were killed, and two were captured.
A second road, called the Hinman Settler Road, was built between 1791 and 1793. This road branched off from the Bayley-Hazen Road in Greensboro and went to Derby. These two roads were very important for people settling in northern Vermont.
Greensboro During the Civil War
Many soldiers from Greensboro fought in the Civil War. Eight of these soldiers were captured and held in Andersonville Prison. Sadly, only one of them returned home.
Modern Developments and the Highland Lodge
In the early 1900s, some properties near the Highland Lodge had rules that prevented them from being sold to Jewish people. These rules were later found to be illegal by the US Supreme Court in 1948.
The Highland Lodge opened in 1954. It was a hotel and restaurant that stayed open all year. It had a beach on Caspian Lake with boats and programs for kids. In winter, it offered nature hikes and cross-country ski trails. The lodge also hosted special events like weddings and music programs.
The Highland Lodge mostly closed in 2011, offering only room rentals. However, a group of investors bought it in 2016. They have since reopened the lodge and its restaurant for different seasons.
