Guillermo Jullian de la Fuente was a Chilean architect and painter. He was born in Valparaíso, Chile in 1931 and passed away in Santiago, Chile in 2008. After finishing his architecture studies, Jullian left Chile for Europe. He really wanted to work with the famous Swiss architect Le Corbusier.
Life and Work
Guillermo Jullian de la Fuente and his wife traveled around Europe. They visited many buildings designed by Le Corbusier. In 1958, they settled in Paris. Jullian wrote a letter to Le Corbusier. He told him about Valparaíso and how much he admired his work. He asked for a job at Le Corbusier's office.
After a few letters, Jullian started working there in 1959. He stayed until Le Corbusier died in 1965. For six months, Jullian was Le Corbusier's only employee. Later, other people joined the team. As the main assistant, Jullian helped with many important projects.
Some of these projects included:
- The Carpenter Center for the Visual Arts at Harvard University
- The Knowledge Museum in Chandigargh, India
- The Olivetti Laboratories
- The Baghdad Stadium
- The French embassy in Brasilia
- The Venice Hospital
Jullian's help was very important in some of these works. For example, in the Olivetti Laboratories, the Carpenter Center, and the Venice Hospital. People sometimes see him as a co-creator of these designs.
When Le Corbusier died in August 1965, Jullian de la Fuente was working on the Venice Hospital project. After Le Corbusier's Paris office closed, Jullian started his own company. It was called Atelier Jullian and was located in Paris. He continued to work with some of Le Corbusier's former colleagues.
He was asked to finish the Venice Hospital building. However, the city government stopped the project in 1972. His studio then designed a fairground in Valencia, Spain, in 1969. They also designed the French Embassy in Rabat, Morocco, from 1978 to 1984.
In the mid-1980s, Jullian de la Fuente moved to the United States. He opened a new office with Ann Pendleton in 1987. Their company, Atelier Jullian and Pendleton, designed several important projects. One notable project was the home of astronomer Carl Sagan in Ithaca, New York. Jullian also taught at many universities in the US. These included the University of Kentucky, Harvard, Cornell, and the University of Pennsylvania.
After living in the United States for 17 years, Jullian returned to Chile. He was 73 years old. While in Chile, he received a request for his last house design, called Maison Mars. To work on this project, he decided to live in Santiago. He also began teaching at several universities there. Guillermo Jullian de la Fuente passed away on March 21, 2008, in Santiago, Chile.
