Gunma Prefecture (which is called 群馬県 or Gunma-ken in Japanese) is a special area in Japan. It's like a state or province. It is located in the Kantō region on the big island of Honshu. The main city and capital of Gunma is Maebashi.

History of Gunma

Gunma Prefecture was created during the Meiji period. This was a time when Japan was changing a lot. The land that became Gunma used to be part of two older areas called Keno Province and Kōzuke Province.

Gunma is located in the northwestern part of the Kantō Plain, which is a large flat area. However, most of Gunma is covered by mountains.

Where is Gunma Located?

Gunma shares its northern borders with Niigata Prefecture and Fukushima Prefecture. To the east, it is next to Tochigi Prefecture. On its western side, you'll find Nagano Prefecture. Finally, Saitama Prefecture is located to the south of Gunma.
