Hüttwilen is a small town, also called a municipality, located in the Frauenfeld District in the canton of Thurgau in Switzerland. It's a place with a long history and beautiful natural surroundings.

Hüttwilen's History

Hüttwilen has been home to people for a very long time. Archeologists have found tools and signs of a settlement from the Mesolithic period, which was the Middle Stone Age. Later, during the Roman era, there was a large farm here.

The name Hutewiler was first used in 1255. In 1466, the village came under the control of the Carthusian monastery at Ittingen. This monastery had a lot of power over the village until 1798.

Changes in Religion

A church was built in Hüttwilen in 1466. In 1529, during the Protestant Reformation, the village became Protestant. But by 1551, both Catholics and Protestants shared the same church building. This continued until 1961! New churches were built for each group in the 1960s.

How People Lived and Worked

For many years, people in Hüttwilen made their living from wine production, farming, and growing fruit. Later, they also started raising animals and producing dairy products.

In the early 1900s, a hand embroidery factory opened. People also harvested peat (a type of fuel from bogs). Changes to the Seebach river and land improvements helped create more farmland.

Farming was very important until about 1960. After that, more businesses started to grow. Today, one of the biggest employers is the Nussli Group, which builds structures and scaffolding.

Hüttwilen covers an area of about 17.66 square kilometers. A large part of this land, about 60%, is used for farming. Forests cover about 30% of the area. The rest of the land has buildings, roads, or is covered by lakes and rivers.

Lakes and Landscape

Hüttwilen is located in the Seebachtal valley, between the towns of Frauenfeld and Diessenhofen. It's known for its beautiful lakes: Nussbaumersee, Hüttwilersee, and Hasensee. These lakes are a big part of the municipality's natural beauty.

In 1997, the current municipality of Hüttwilen was formed. It brought together the smaller villages of Hüttwilen (including Kalchrain), Nussbaumen, and Uerschhausen.

Hüttwilen has some very important historical places. The old Cistercian monastery and a prehistoric settlement by the lake at Üerschhausen are considered heritage sites of national significance in Switzerland.

The prehistoric settlement at Nussbaumersee is also part of the Prehistoric Pile dwellings around the Alps, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This means it's recognized as a very important place for everyone in the world.

The monastery building was built between 1703 and 1723. It has been changed a lot over the years. Since 1848, the canton (state) has owned it and used it as a school.
