About the Airport
The airport you see today opened in 1982. It replaced an older airfield in an area called La Manga.
This airport has one main runway, special paths for planes called taxiways, and buildings for storing planes called hangars. It also has a large building called a terminal where passengers check in and board their flights. This terminal can handle nine or more airplanes at once.
Hermosillo Airport is often used as a backup airport. If planes can't land at Tijuana International Airport because of bad weather or other issues, they can come here instead. The airport's runways were made wider in the early 2000s. This helps it handle very large planes, like the Boeing 787.
The airport is also a military base, known as BAM-18. This means it handles flights for the Mexican Air Force.
The airport is named after Ignacio Pesqueira. He was a general who helped the Mexican army fight against the French during an invasion in the 1800s.
In 2021, about 1,559,900 passengers used the airport. In 2022, this number grew to 1,945,400 passengers.
