History of IFP School
IFP School has a long history. Even before it officially started, there were places in France that taught about oil and gas. In 1954, these places joined together to form the École Nationale Supérieure du Pétrole et des Moteurs (ENSPM). This school is now known as IFP School. It became part of the French Ministry of Ecology.
Over the years, the school grew a lot. In 1963, they added a center for studying oil economics. Later, in 1975, they started offering advanced research degrees. To help more students from around the world, they added programs in English in 1989. They also started offering training where students could learn on the job (called apprenticeships) in 1996. Since 2002, IFP School has also offered degrees in other countries.
Campus and Locations
IFP School is located on the IFP Energies Nouvelles site in Rueil-Malmaison. This is about 12.6 kilometers (7.8 miles) from the center of Paris.
The campus has several buildings:
- An administrative building
- An academic building with classrooms, computer labs, offices, and a library
- A cafeteria
- A dormitory with 132 apartments for students
IFP School also offers degree programs in other countries. These include Algeria, Nigeria, Malaysia, Russia, and Venezuela. They work with local universities and companies to offer these programs.
How IFP School is Organized
The school is led by its Dean, Christine Travers. An advisory board helps guide the school. This board includes important people from industry, former students, and experts in research and education.
The school's teaching and research are divided into four main centers:
- Exploring and Producing Oil
- Refining, Petrochemicals, and Gas
- Engines and How to Use Hydrocarbons
- Economics and Management
Each center has a director, people who organize the programs, and teachers.
What Students Study
IFP School mainly offers programs for graduate students. These are for young engineers and people already working in the industry. Students can also do research for their master's or doctoral theses in IFP's labs. This research covers oil, gas, new energy technologies, and engines.
About half of the students at IFP School come from outside France. Also, 80% of students get scholarships or money from companies to help them pay for school. IFP School says that 99% of its graduates find jobs after finishing their studies.
Here are some of the main degrees offered, organized by their centers:
Economics and Management Programs
- Energy Technology Economics & Management (ETEM)
- Sustainable Development, Environmental and Energy Economics
- Energy and Environmental Policy and Economics
- Energy and Markets
Exploration-Production Programs
- Petroleum Geosciences, Geology or Geophysics
- Reservoir Geoscience and Engineering
- Petroleum Engineering and Project Development
- Lithosphere, Basins, Oil
IC Engines and Hydrocarbon Utilizations Programs
- Powertrain Engineering
- Energy and Products
- Energy and Powertrain
- Electrification of Automotive Propulsion
Refining, Petrochemicals, Gas Programs
In 2010, a team of five students from IFP School won a big competition called the Imperial Barrel Award. This was a worldwide contest sponsored by the American Association of Petroleum Geologists.
Student Life
IFP School offers many activities outside of classes. These include language courses, a Business Skills Center, and various cultural and sports clubs. The campus is only a 30-minute train ride from central Paris by RER A. This means students can easily enjoy all that Paris has to offer.
Notable Alumni
Many successful people have graduated from IFP School. Some of them include:
- Olivier Bouygues, a top leader at Bouygues, a large French company.
- Pierre Gadonneix, a French businessman who was the chairman and CEO of EDF from 2004 to 2009.
- François Perrodo, the chairman of the board of Perenco, an oil and gas company.
