The IFP School is a special engineering school in Rueil-Malmaison, France. Its full French name is École Nationale Supérieure du Pétrole et des Moteurs, which means "National Higher School of Petroleum and Engines".
It was started in 1954. The school is part of a bigger group called IFP Energies nouvelles (IFPEN). This group is a French public center for research and training. About 600 students finish their studies here each year. They can choose from 20 different programs, with 10 of them taught in English. The school has 40 regular teachers and 350 experts from different industries who also teach.

A Look at IFP School's History
Even before IFP School, there were places in France for learning about oil and gas. These started as early as 1924. In 1944, a new organization called IFP was created. All these older schools then joined IFP. They moved to the campus in Rueil-Malmaison.
The official joining happened in 1954. At that time, the government made a rule to create the École Nationale Supérieure du Pétrole et des Moteurs (ENSPM). This new school became connected to the French Ministry of Ecology, Sustainable Development and Energy.
The school has grown a lot over the years.
- In 1963, it started a center for the business side of oil.
- In 1975, it began offering advanced research degrees.
- English language programs were added in 1989.
- In 1996, students could start training through apprenticeships.
- Since 2002, the school has offered degrees in other countries. These are in important energy regions around the world.
Exploring the Campus
IFP School is located on the IFP Energies Nouvelles site. This is in Rueil-Malmaison, a town near Paris. The campus is about 12.6 kilometers (7.8 miles) from the center of Paris.
The campus has several buildings.
- There is an administrative building for school operations.
- The main academic building holds classrooms, computer labs, and offices.
- It also has a library where students can study.
- There is a cafeteria for meals.
- A dormitory with 132 apartments provides housing for students.
IFP School also offers programs in other countries. These include Algeria, Nigeria, Malaysia, Russia, and Venezuela. The school works with local universities and companies there.
How IFP School is Organized
The school focuses on two main areas: Research and teaching (called academics). These are split into four main groups, called centers. The school's general management and administration are handled by a separate department.
The four main centers are:
- Exploration-Production: This center teaches how to find oil and gas. It also covers how to get it out of the ground.
- Refining, Petrochemicals, Gas: This group focuses on turning raw oil and gas into useful products. These include gasoline, plastics, and other chemicals.
- IC Engines and Hydrocarbon Utilizations: This center studies engines, like those in cars. It also looks at how different fuels are used.
- Economics and Management: This part of the school teaches about the business side of the energy world. This includes how energy markets work.
What Students Learn: Academics
IFP School mainly offers advanced training programs. These are for young engineers and people already working in the industry. Students can also do research for master's and doctoral degrees. This research happens in IFP's labs. It covers all areas related to oil, gas, new energy, and engines.
About half of the students at IFP School come from outside France. A large number, about 80%, get help paying for school. This help comes from scholarships or company sponsorships. Because of this support, IFP says that 99% of its graduates find jobs.
Here are some of the important degrees offered, grouped by their centers:
Programs in Economics and Management
- Energy Technology Economics & Management (ETEM): This program teaches about the business of energy technology.
- Sustainable Development, Environmental and Energy Economics: Students learn about protecting the environment and the economy of energy.
- Energy and Environmental Policy and Economics: This focuses on rules and plans for energy and the environment.
- Energy and Markets: This program explores how energy is bought and sold.
Programs in Exploration-Production
- Petroleum Geosciences, Geology or Geophysics: These programs teach about the Earth's structure and how to find oil and gas.
- Reservoir Geoscience and Engineering: This is about understanding and managing underground oil and gas reservoirs.
- Petroleum Engineering and Project Development: Students learn how to design and manage oil and gas projects.
- Lithosphere, Basins, Oil: This covers the Earth's crust, rock formations, and oil deposits.
Programs in IC Engines and Hydrocarbon Utilizations
- Powertrain Engineering: This focuses on the systems that make vehicles move.
- Energy and Products: This program looks at how energy is used to create different products.
- Energy and Powertrain: This combines studies of energy with vehicle propulsion systems.
- Electrification of Automotive Propulsion: This teaches about electric and hybrid car technologies.
Programs in Refining, Petrochemicals, Gas
- Processes and Polymers: This covers how raw materials are changed into useful products and plastics.
- Energy and Processes: This looks at how energy is used in industrial processes.
In 2010, a group of five students from IFP School won a big competition. It was called the Imperial Barrel Award. This is a worldwide contest for geology students. It is sponsored by the American Association of Petroleum Geologists.
Student Life at IFP School
Students at IFP School have many activities outside of their classes. There are language courses to help them learn new languages. The Business Skills Center helps students develop important work skills. There are also different groups for cultural activities and sports.
The campus is only about a 30-minute train ride from central Paris. This means students can easily enjoy all the fun things to do in the city.
Famous People Who Went Here
Many successful people have studied at IFP School. Here are a few of them:
- Olivier Bouygues: He is a top leader at Bouygues, a big French company.
- Pierre Gadonneix: A French businessman who led EDF, a major energy company.
- François Perrodo: He is the chairman of the board for Perenco, an oil and gas company.
- Laurent Rossi: He is the chief executive officer for Automobiles Alpine and the Alpine F1 Team.
- Macky Sall: He is the President of Senegal, a country in Africa.
- Jon Samseth: He is an expert on energy issues and advises the UNEP.
