The Story of IHOP: How it Started
IHOP was founded in 1958 by Jerry Lapin, Al Lapin, and Albert Kallis. The very first restaurant opened its doors on July 16, 1958. It was located in Burbank, California. Two other early locations in California are still open today.
The first IHOP buildings had a special design. They looked like a steep-roofed A-frame house with a bright blue roof. The last building with this unique design was built in 1979. Even though most new IHOPs look different, you can still spot some of these older A-frame buildings across the U.S.
In 1973, the company decided to shorten its name to "IHOP." This was done to make it easier for people to remember. They even used a cartoon kangaroo in their commercials at the time! Since then, both "International House of Pancakes" and "IHOP" have been official names. Over time, the menu grew to include more lunch and dinner items.
IHOP Buys Applebee's
On July 16, 2007, IHOP Corporation announced a big plan. They wanted to buy another popular restaurant chain called Applebee's. This deal was worth about $2.1 billion. IHOP planned to let other owners run most of Applebee's restaurants.
Applebee's shareholders, who own parts of the company, voted to approve the purchase. After the deal was completed on November 29, 2007, IHOP changed its company name to DineEquity. Later, in 2018, a restaurant owner even opened a special restaurant in Detroit. It was a mix of both an Applebee's and an IHOP!
What's on the IHOP Menu?
IHOP is famous for its breakfast foods. You can find many kinds of pancakes, waffles, French toast, and omelettes. But IHOP also has a full menu for lunch and dinner. This includes tasty sandwiches, burgers, and fresh salads.
Where Can You Find IHOP Restaurants?
IHOP has many locations around the world, totaling 1,841 restaurants. You can find them in North and South America, the Middle East, and South Asia.
IHOP has expanded into many new countries. For example, they opened restaurants in the Middle East starting in 2012. By 2018, IHOP was in six Middle Eastern countries. In 2016, they opened in Panama, and later in 2019, they expanded into South America, opening in Ecuador and Peru.
IHOP also has smaller, faster versions of its restaurants called "IHOP Express." These are often found in places like airports, school campuses, and travel centers. In 2019, IHOP announced plans for a new fast-casual restaurant called Flip'd by IHOP. This new place would serve pancake bowls, burgers, and fried chicken.
How IHOP Advertises
In June 2015, IHOP changed its logo. The new logo has a curved line under the "O" and "P" letters. This makes it look like a smiley face. The company said the old logo looked too much like a frown.
In June 2018, IHOP launched a fun marketing campaign. They joked that they would "flip" their name to "IHOb." People on social media wondered what the "b" stood for. It was later revealed that "IHOb" was a way to promote their hamburgers! This helped people remember that IHOP serves more than just breakfast. The next year, they even joked about it again to promote a new burger that has a pancake in it.
Trademark Dispute
In 2010, IHOP had a disagreement with another group called International House of Prayer. IHOP believed the name was too similar to theirs. They worked out the issue outside of court, and the matter was resolved.
