Jermaine Anthony Jenas (born 18 February 1983) is an English television presenter, football expert, and former professional footballer. He played as a central midfielder for several English clubs. These included Nottingham Forest, Newcastle United, and Tottenham Hotspur. He scored 39 goals in 341 league games. Jenas also played 21 times for the senior England national football team, scoring one goal.

Jenas started his professional career at 17 for his hometown club, Nottingham Forest. They were in the second division of English football. A little over a year later, he moved to Premier League club Newcastle United for £5 million. He earned his first cap for England in February 2003 when he was 19. He was also named PFA Young Player of the Year for the 2002–03 season.

Jenas faced several serious injuries during his career. Despite this, he stayed at the top level of football. He moved to Tottenham in 2005 for £7 million. With Tottenham, he won the Football League Cup in the 2007–08 season. He was part of the England squad for the 2006 FIFA World Cup but did not play in any matches. His last game for England was in 2009.

Later in his playing career, Jenas had loan spells at Aston Villa and Nottingham Forest. He then moved permanently to Queens Park Rangers in 2013. After QPR was relegated, he played for them for another season. Injuries eventually forced him to retire from playing. While recovering, he started working in media as a football expert. He continues this role for the BBC on Match of the Day and for BT Sport. He also presented The One Show for the BBC from 2020 until 2024.

Early Life and Education

Jenas was born in Nottingham. His father, Dennis, played semi-professional football in the 1980s. Jermaine grew up in Nottingham and went to the Catholic Becket School in West Bridgford, Nottinghamshire.

Club Career

Nottingham Forest

Jenas began his football journey at Nottingham Forest. At the time, they were in the First Division. He played his first professional game at 17 on 7 January 2001. This was an FA Cup match against Wolverhampton Wanderers. A week later, he played his first league game. These were his only two games that season.

In the 2001–02 season, Jenas became a regular player. He scored his first senior goal on 18 August in a game against Barnsley. After scoring four goals in 33 games, Jenas was sold to Newcastle United in February 2002 for £5 million.

Newcastle United

Jenas joined Newcastle United in 2002. Newcastle paid £5 million for him, making him one of the most expensive teenagers in British football at the time. He first played in an international tournament in the U21 European Championships in Switzerland.

In his first full season with Newcastle, he won the PFA Young Player of the Year award for 2002–03. He played 32 Premier League games that season and scored 6 goals. Jenas was known for his strong "box-to-box" play. This means he played well in both defense and attack. He also had the ability to score from midfield.

He played alongside famous international footballers at Newcastle. Some of these included Alan Shearer, Shay Given, and Patrick Kluivert. Newcastle played in European competitions during his time there. These included the Champions League and the UEFA Cup. Jenas also earned 14 of his 21 England caps while playing for Newcastle United. On 31 August 2005, Newcastle accepted an offer of £7 million from Tottenham Hotspur for him.

Jenas joined Tottenham Hotspur on 31 August 2005 for £7 million. In his first season, he scored seven goals from midfield. Tottenham qualified for the UEFA Cup that year. He scored a goal in Tottenham's 3–1 FA Cup win over Southend United. This was his first game back after being out for 13 matches due to injury.

Jenas signed a new five-year contract with Tottenham in August 2007. His performance improved greatly under manager Juande Ramos. Jenas scored the first goals in both legs of the League Cup semi-finals against Arsenal. Tottenham won both matches. Jenas also helped set up the winning goal in the League Cup final against Chelsea on 24 February 2008. Tottenham won 2–1.

In July 2008, Jenas extended his contract with Tottenham until 2013. He was also named the team's new vice-captain. On 26 December, he played his 100th league game for Tottenham against Fulham. He scored the only goal in a 1–0 win against West Bromwich Albion.

Aston Villa Loan

On 31 August 2011, Jenas joined Aston Villa on loan from Tottenham for the season. He wore the number 8 shirt, just like at Spurs. He made his debut for Villa on 5 November as a substitute against Norwich City.

On 3 December, Jenas started his first game for Villa against Manchester United. During the game, he suffered a serious Achilles tendon injury. This injury kept him out for six months and ended his time at Aston Villa.

Return to Nottingham Forest

Jenas returned to Tottenham after his surgery. On 28 September 2012, he signed a short-term loan deal with his former club, Nottingham Forest. He scored his first goal during this loan spell against Barnsley in a 4–1 win. His loan was extended until January 2013, but his last game was on 17 November. Forest did not lose any of the six games he played on loan.

Queens Park Rangers

On the last day of the January 2013 transfer window, Queens Park Rangers signed Jenas. He joined them on an 18-month contract. He was reunited with his former manager, Harry Redknapp. He scored his first goal for QPR in a 3–1 home win over Sunderland on 9 March. He scored again in the next game against Aston Villa.

Jenas played 12 games for QPR, but the team was relegated from the Premier League. He then played 28 games for QPR in the Championship. In April 2014, he suffered another serious injury to his knee (a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament). This injury kept him out for the rest of the season. His contract ended at the end of the 2013–14 season, but he stayed with QPR during his recovery.

International Career

Jenas played for England at various youth levels, starting from under-15. He made his debut for the senior England team against Australia on 12 February 2003.

Even though he had injuries at the end of the 2005–06 season, he was chosen for the 2006 FIFA World Cup squad. However, he did not play in any matches during the tournament.

His improved form at Spurs led to him being called up for Fabio Capello's first game as England manager. This was a friendly match against Switzerland on 6 February 2008. Jenas scored the first goal in the 40th minute, and England won 2–1.

In total, Jenas played 21 games for the senior England team and scored one goal.

Retirement from Football

Jenas officially announced his retirement from football on 7 January 2016. He had been unable to fully recover from his knee injury. Looking back in 2014, he said his PFA Young Player of the Year award and his League Cup win were his career highlights. He also said his biggest regret was not playing for Nottingham Forest at the highest level.

Jenas mentioned that he played while injured for a few years because he loved the game. He felt this might have affected his performance. He also regretted not getting the chance to play in a World Cup.
