History of Kirby
Kirby was officially created in 1790. A man named Roswell Hopkins received the land as payment for his work as a government official in Vermont. The area was first called Hopkinsville. Later, it was combined with a piece of land from the nearby town of Burke and renamed Kirby.
How Kirby Got its Name
People have different ideas about how the name Kirby was chosen. The most common idea is that it comes from the English word "Kirkby." This word means a village or settlement built around a church. By 1807, when the town was fully organized, Roswell Hopkins had sold his land and moved away.

Kirby is in the eastern part of Caledonia County, in northeastern Vermont. It shares its borders with several other towns. These include St. Johnsbury to the southwest and Lyndon to the west. To the north is Burke, and to the northeast is Victory. Concord is to the southeast, and Waterford is to the south.

U.S. Route 2 is a main road that goes through the southern part of Kirby. This road connects St. Johnsbury in the west to Lancaster, New Hampshire, in the east. The highest point in Kirby is the top of Kirby Mountain. It stands about 838 meters (2,750 feet) tall and is located on the border between Kirby and Victory.
