History of Krohn Conservatory
The Krohn Conservatory was finished in 1933. It took the place of smaller greenhouses that had been in Eden Park since 1894. At first, it was just called the Eden Park Greenhouse.
In 1937, it was renamed to honor Irwin M. Krohn. He was a very important member of the Board of Park Commissioners from 1912 to 1948.
Building Design and Restoration
The building was designed by the architect firm Rapp & Meacham. They used the Art Deco style, which was popular at the time. The conservatory was built to look like a Gothic arch.
In 1966, a big hailstorm caused a lot of damage to the conservatory. Another company, Lord & Burnham, was hired to fix it. They replaced the old wooden window frames with strong aluminum ones.
Amazing Plant Collections
The Krohn Conservatory is home to more than 3,500 different kinds of plants! These plants come from all over the world. Here are some of the main collections you can see:
- Bonsai Collection - This collection features amazing bonsai trees. These are miniature trees carefully grown and shaped. Some are from the conservatory, some from a local bonsai club, and some from private owners.
- Desert Garden - This area is filled with succulent plants and cacti. These are plants that can store water, like agaves, aloes, and yuccas. You'll also see different types of Cereus, Opuntia, and Pereskia.
- Floral Display - This section changes throughout the year with six different seasonal flower shows. There's also a permanent collection of citrus trees, including orange, kumquat, giant Ponderosa lemon, and grapefruit trees.
- Orchid Display - About 75 beautiful orchids are always in bloom here. The conservatory has thousands of orchids from 17 different groups! You can also see a Monstera deliciosa plant in this display.
- Palm House - This is a tall central room, about 45-foot (14 m) high. It's filled with tall palm trees, rubber trees, and banana plants. There are also smaller plants and ground cover. A 20-foot (6.1 m) waterfall flows into a stream with goldfish. Many trees have epiphytic plants growing on them, like bromeliads, orchids, and ferns.
- Tropical House - This house has many different kinds of ferns, both on the ground and growing on other plants. You'll also find collections of cycads, bromeliads, and begonias. This section also shows important plants that we use every day, like a cacao tree (where chocolate comes from!), Pomegranate, vanilla vine, and dwarf banana plants.
