Lawrence Alan Kudlow (born August 20, 1947) is an American conservative commentator, economist, and journalist. He is known for sharing his views on financial news. From 2018 to 2021, he worked as the Director of the National Economic Council for President Donald Trump. This council helps the President with economic decisions.

Before working for the government, Kudlow was a host on CNBC, a TV channel about business and finance. After his time with the Trump administration, he joined Fox Business as a financial news commentator. By 2024, he also became a leader at the America First Policy Institute, which is a group that develops ideas for government policies.

Early Life and School

Kudlow was born and grew up in New Jersey. His family is Jewish. He went to The Elisabeth Morrow School and then the Dwight-Englewood School for high school.

In 1969, he earned a bachelor's degree in history from the University of Rochester in Rochester, New York. Later, in 1971, Kudlow started a master's program at Princeton University. However, he left before finishing his degree.

Career Journey

Early Work

Kudlow started his career as an economist at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York. This bank is part of the U.S. central banking system. He worked in the part of the Fed that handles how money moves in the economy.

In the 1970s, Kudlow also worked on political campaigns. He helped with the U.S. Senate campaigns of Joseph Duffey and Daniel Patrick Moynihan.

Working for President Reagan

From 1981 to 1985, Kudlow worked for President Ronald Reagan. He was an associate director for economics and planning in the Office of Management and Budget (OMB). This office helps the President manage the government's money and plans.

Financial Industry Work

In 1987, Kudlow joined Bear Stearns, a large financial company. He became their chief economist. This means he was the main expert on economic trends for the company. He also advised Arthur Laffer, another economist known for his ideas on taxes.

Media Roles

Kudlow became an Economics Editor at National Review Online in 2001. He also hosted several TV shows on CNBC. These included America Now, Kudlow & Cramer (with Jim Cramer), Kudlow & Company, and The Kudlow Report.

He was also a regular guest on CNBC's Squawk Box. From 2004, he co-hosted The John Batchelor Show on the radio. In 2006, he started his own radio show, The Larry Kudlow Show, on WABC. This show talked about politics and economics.

In April 2018, Kudlow said that the U.S. would sanction Russia. However, the U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, Nikki Haley, said this was not true. Kudlow later apologized to her.

During the 2018–2019 government shutdown, some federal workers had to work without pay. Kudlow said these workers were "volunteering" because they loved their country.

In February 2020, as the coronavirus pandemic was starting, Kudlow said the U.S. had "contained" the virus.

Fox Business

In February 2021, Larry Kudlow joined the Fox Business Network (FBN). He became a host for a weekday show called "Kudlow." His show talks about economic news, market analysis, and government money policies. It shares economic ideas from a generally conservative point of view.

He decided to continue his work at Fox Business instead of joining Donald Trump's second administration.

Political Views

Economy

Kudlow describes himself as a "Reagan supply-sider." This means he believes that cutting taxes and reducing government rules helps the economy grow. He thinks that lower tax rates encourage businesses and people to work more. This, in turn, can lead to more tax money for the government.

He supported the tax cuts made by President George W. Bush. He believed these cuts would lead to a strong economy. Kudlow also supported free trade before joining the White House. However, he later agreed with President Trump's tariffs, seeing them as a way to negotiate.

Politics

In 2002, Kudlow wrote that the United States should attack Iraq. He believed Saddam Hussein had dangerous weapons. He also thought that taking strong action against terrorism would help the stock market.

In 2016, Kudlow supported Donald Trump for president. He defended Trump's plan to build a wall on the Mexico–United States border. He said it was needed to keep the country safe. After a meeting of world leaders in 2018, Kudlow criticized Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

Personal Life

Kudlow has been married three times. In 1974, he married Nancy Ellen Gerstein. In 1981, he married Susan Cullman Sicher. In 1986, he married Judith "Judy" Pond, who is a painter.

Kudlow was raised Jewish but later became Catholic. He is a member of the Catholic Advisory Board for the Ave Maria Mutual Funds. He also served on the board of trustees for Fordham University.

On June 11, 2018, Kudlow had a "very mild" heart attack. He was taken to the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center. The White House said he was doing well and expected to recover fully. He was discharged from the hospital two days later.
