Entrance into the municipality

Les Enfers covers an area of about 7.09 square kilometers (2.74 square miles). A large part of this land, almost half (48.5%), is used for farming. Another big part, about 47.8%, is covered by forests.

Only a small amount of land (2.7%) has buildings or roads on it. The rest (0.4%) is land that can't be used for farming or building.

Most of the forested land is thick forest. Some areas also have orchards or small groups of trees. For farming, the land is used for growing crops, pastures for animals, and alpine pastures in the mountains.

The municipality includes the main village of Les Enfers and a smaller settlement called Cerniévillers.

Some nearby towns, including Les Enfers, are thinking about joining together in the future to form a new, larger municipality called Franches-Montagnes.

What Does the Coat of Arms Mean?

The coat of arms for Les Enfers is a special kind called "canting arms." This means the design on the shield is a visual pun or hint about the town's name. In this case, it relates to the French word for "Hell."
