Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Afro-Latinos, also known as Afro-Latin Americans, are people in Latin America and the Caribbean who have ancestors from Africa. Most of their African ancestors were brought to the Americas during the trans-Atlantic slave trade. This was a time when about 95% of all Africans brought to the Americas arrived in Latin America and the Caribbean.

Today, many people in countries like Brazil, Cuba, the Dominican Republic, Honduras, Panama, Puerto Rico, Colombia, and Mexico are Afro-Latinos. The very first Africans brought to the "New World" arrived on the island of Hispaniola, which is now shared by the Dominican Republic and Haiti. Most of the enslaved Africans were taken to Brazil. Only a small part, about 5%, went to North America, and their descendants are known as African Americans.
