Main Characters
Greg Heffley
Gregory "Greg" Heffley is the main character and is 11 years old in the first book. Greg sometimes does things that aren't very nice, like playing pranks on his best friend, Rowley. He can also be a bit selfish. However, Greg also shows kindness sometimes. He helps his brother with homework and even helps his friend get a date for a dance. He also forgives his friends when they mess up.
Greg is played by Zachary Gordon in the first three movies and Jason Drucker in the fourth movie.
Rowley Jefferson
Rowley Jefferson is Greg's best friend. In the first book, Rowley is also 11 years old. Sometimes, Greg sees Rowley as a bit of a challenge, even though Rowley is usually very kind. In Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Third Wheel, Rowley starts dating Abigail Brown, who was supposed to be Greg's date! This continues in Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Hard Luck, where Rowley spends more time with Abigail than Greg. But don't worry, they break up, and Rowley and Greg become best friends again.
Rowley has some interests that Greg finds a bit strange for their age, like loving a singer named Joshie, who Greg thinks is for younger kids. Rowley also created the famous Zoo Wee Mama comic strip.
In the movies, Rowley is played by Robert Capron in the first three films and Owen Asztalos in The Long Haul.
Frank Heffley
Frank Heffley is Greg's dad. He's 40 years old in the first book. He loves U.S. history and even has a replica of a Civil War battlefield. Frank can be a bit grumpy around Rowley and doesn't really understand Greg's love for video games. He also doesn't like heavy metal or teenagers very much. He often tries to make Greg tougher and even threatens to send him to a military academy in The Last Straw, but Greg avoids it.
Even though they have their ups and downs, Greg and Frank grow closer in Dog Days. Frank loves snacks, but he tries to go on diets. Greg once caught him secretly eating brownies in the garage!
Frank is played by Steve Zahn in the first three Diary of a Wimpy Kid movies. In Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Long Haul, he's played by Tom Everett Scott.
Susan Heffley
Susan Heffley is Greg's mom. She's a loving and caring mom, but she can also be a bit embarrassing, bossy, and sometimes doesn't quite understand her older sons, Rodrick and Greg. She often tries to get the family to spend time together, which usually doesn't work out. Susan and Frank often show more favoritism towards their youngest son, Manny.
Susan is played by Rachael Harris in the first three movies and Alicia Silverstone in the fourth film.
Manny Heffley
Manny Heffley is Greg and Rodrick's three-year-old brother. He is often spoiled by his parents. Manny can be a bit selfish and has tantrums when he doesn't get his way. He once caused a big power outage in the house in Cabin Fever. He often gets away with things, like breaking Greg's items, and usually blames Greg or Rodrick.
Despite being so young, Manny is quite smart! He figured out how to sell all of Greg's items in a game called Net Kritterz and even locked the whole family out of watching TV by using the parental lock to only watch his favorite cartoons. In The Long Haul, Manny even speaks fluent Spanish, which helps the family get home!
Manny is played by Connor and Owen Fielding in the first three movies and Dylan and Wyatt Walters in The Long Haul.
Rodrick Heffley
Rodrick Heffley is Greg's older brother. He's 16 years old in the first book. Rodrick is often lazy and can be a bit mean to Greg. He plays drums in a rock band called "Löded Diper," known for their loud concerts and not-so-great musical skills. Frank, their dad, doesn't trust teenagers much, and Rodrick is no exception.
In the first three movies, Rodrick is played by Devon Bostick. In the fourth film, Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Long Haul, Rodrick is played by Charlie Wright.
Greg's Extended Family
Gramma
Gramma is Susan's mom and Greg's grandma on his mom's side. Greg sometimes calls her when his dad is scolding him because his dad won't do it when she's around. She loves Manny the most, even though she denies it! You can see pictures of Manny all over her house. She also enjoys bingo and knitting. Gramma has a dog named Sweetheart, or Sweetie, who she overfeeds.
Grandpa Heffley
Grandpa Heffley is Greg's grandpa on his dad's side. He lives in a retirement home called Leisure Towers and loves playing boring games like "Gutbusters." He spends his time watching the security cameras in the retirement home lobby. In Old School, he moves in with the Heffleys because the rent was too high. Grandpa has had girlfriends he met online. He once accidentally invited all of them over for a party! Greg is his favorite grandchild. Grandpa is known for making a disgusting dish called "Watercress Salad." He and Frank, his son, don't have the best relationship. Grandpa once accidentally ran over Frank's dog and lied about it for years.
Uncle Joe Heffley
Joseph "Joe" Heffley is Frank's brother and Greg's uncle. Frank and Joe have a bit of a rivalry. Uncle Joe once told Manny to watch out for a "potty monster," which made Manny scared to use the bathroom! Joe's kids also call Frank "Aunt Fwank," which Frank thinks Joe taught them to do on purpose.
Great-Uncle Charlie
Great-Uncle Charlie is Greg's great-uncle. He's Greg's "secret weapon" at Christmas because he buys Greg presents that Frank won't allow. However, it often backfires, and Greg gets the wrong thing. Charlie is single and spends his money well.
Loretta (née Heffley)
Loretta (née Heffley) is Greg's great-aunt and Grandpa's sister. She often appears at Thanksgiving dinner. Greg and Rodrick don't seem to like her much, as they fight over who has to greet her first.
Gammie Heffley
Gammie Heffley is Greg's great-grandmother and the unofficial leader of the Heffley family. She appears in The Ugly Truth. Gammie is a bit of a trickster and knows a lot from "experience." When someone in the family turns 12 or 13, she gives them "The Talk" about not rushing to grow up.
Gammie loves visitors for dinner. She once tricked her whole family into rushing to her house by saying she won a lot of money on a scratch ticket, just so they would all come over for dinner!
Reba (née Heffley)
Reba (née Heffley) was Greg's great-aunt. She was very stubborn. In Wrecking Ball, it was revealed she passed away, and Greg's family accidentally went to the wrong funeral! They later received an inheritance from her.
Uncle Gary Heffley
Garrison "Gary" Heffley is Greg's uncle and Frank's youngest brother. He has been married several times. Gary often has jobs that don't work out. In The Third Wheel, he lived with Greg's family for a while. He became the DJ at Greg's Valentine's Day dance and sold his shirts there. He later won $40,000 on scratch tickets, which allowed him to move out.
Aunt Dorothy
Aunt Dorothy is Greg's great-aunt and Charlie's wife. She always kisses Greg on the lips, and Greg's mom says it's rude to wipe it off.
Arthur Heffley
Arthur Heffley is Greg's great-uncle. He only speaks in grunts or random sounds. Greg sometimes tries to talk to him, just in case he's trying to communicate.
Great Uncle Bruce
Great Uncle Bruce was Greg's great-uncle who passed away. He is mentioned in Cabin Fever and The Third Wheel. Greg once got a blanket that used to belong to him, which grossed Greg out.
Byron Heffley
Byron Heffley is Frank's cousin. Greg isn't excited to see him because of an incident where they got a flat tire, and Greg forgot about Byron while getting help.
Benjy Heffley
Benjy Heffley is Greg's cousin. When Greg last saw him, Benjy could only say "No!" or "Shut up!" Now he can speak in full sentences and read books, but he still wears a diaper.
Terrence Heffley
Terrence Heffley is Frank's second cousin. Greg thinks he looked just like him when he was younger.
Lawrence Heffley
Lawrence Heffley is Greg's uncle who travels a lot. He rarely comes to family gatherings in person but sometimes appears by webcam.
Aunt Audra
Aunt Audra is one of Susan's sisters. She believes in crystal balls and took Greg to see her fortuneteller a few times.
Aunt Veronica
Aunt Veronica is Greg's aunt and Susan's sister. She rarely sees the family in person because it stresses her out, but she calls them on video chat. Greg once accidentally video chatted with her while on the toilet!
Aunt Gretchen
Aunt Gretchen is Susan's youngest sister. She has two wild twin sons, Malvin and Malcolm, and at least thirty pets!
Malvin and Malcolm
Malvin and Malcolm are Gretchen's two sons and Greg's cousins. They are very wild kids who used to wear child leashes. They once played catch with a sharp piece of concrete, and Malvin ended up needing stitches. Malcolm once shaved his head with Frank's shaving kit!
Aunt Cakey
Aunt Cakey is Susan's oldest sister. She is single and doesn't have kids or pets. When she babysat Greg when he was little, she was very careful with fragile items. She once told Greg not to touch an iron, which made Greg want to touch it even more, leading to a second-degree burn.
Gerald
Gerald is Susan's cousin from California. He lived with the Heffleys for a few months after Greg was born.
Martina
Martina is Susan's cousin who won a lot of money in Las Vegas after running into a mirror in a hotel and suing them!
Uncle Larry
Uncle Larry is a family friend who isn't actually related but always shows up to family gatherings. Greg likes him, but he always sits in Gramma's best chair.
Gramma's Sisters
Gramma has two sisters who don't get along. They try to give each other the most insulting gifts they can think of.
Cecil
Cecil is Greg's adopted uncle, who is only three or four years old. Greg feels a bit awkward around him.
Georgia
Georgia is Greg's second cousin who has a very loose tooth that she never wants anyone to pull out.
Meemaw and Peepaw
Meemaw and Peepaw are Gramma's parents and Greg's great-grandparents on his mom's side. Peepaw is still alive and a bit confused sometimes. Meemaw passed away. She used to hide valuable prizes, like a diamond ring, in Easter eggs. Greg found her valuable ring in an Easter egg at the end of Hard Luck.
Meemaw appears in the film adaption of The Long Haul played by Mimi Gould.
Rowley's Family
Robert Jefferson
Robert Jefferson is Rowley's dad. He's quite strict and doesn't like it when people criticize him or his things. He doesn't let Rowley play video games with any violence. Mr. Jefferson doesn't like Greg much, thinking he's a bad influence on Rowley.
In Dog Days, it's revealed his first name is Robert. In Old School, he gets stuck chaperoning Greg and Rowley on a trip.
Linda Jefferson
Linda Jefferson is Rowley's mom. She often worries about Rowley, like when he broke his toe because of Greg. She usually enjoys Greg's company, but her husband's dislike of Greg sometimes prevents Greg from coming over.
In the movies, Rowley's mom is played by Kaye Capron in Diary of a Wimpy Kid and Bronwen Smith in Dog Days.
Rowley's Grandfather
Rowley's grandfather appears briefly in Rodrick Rules. He had a birthday party where Greg accidentally upset Mr. Jefferson by saying he doubted the grandfather would be alive next year.
Other Characters
Fregley
Fregley is Greg's neighbor and acquaintance. He's known for his many strange and sometimes gross habits. Greg often has to hang out with Fregley, which he doesn't enjoy. Fregley's parents don't let him eat sugar, because it makes him go wild!
In the movies, Fregley is played by Grayson Russell.
Holly Hills
Holly Hills is one of Greg's classmates and the younger sister of Heather Hills. Greg has a crush on her, but she often doesn't seem to notice him or even mistakes him for Fregley! She appears to like Rowley's kindness more.
In the movies, Holly's role is bigger. She's friendly and kind. She and Greg seem to like each other, and she even slips her hand into Greg's at a party! Holly is played by Peyton R. List.
Chirag Gupta
Chirag Gupta is an Indian American classmate of Greg. He is known for being short. Greg once started the "Invisible Chirag" prank, where everyone ignored Chirag, which made him very upset. Greg later apologized.
In the movies, Chirag is a close friend of Greg and Rowley and has a bigger role. He is played by Karan Brar.
Patty Farrell
Patty Farrell is a classmate who has a big rivalry with Greg. She's hardworking but can be bossy. She once ruined Greg's plan to cheat on a geography quiz. In a school play of "The Wizard of Oz", Patty played Dorothy, and Greg, playing a tree, threw apples at her, breaking her glasses!
In the movies, Patty is even more demanding. She's good at wrestling and tennis and often finds ways to hit Greg during sports. She is played by Laine MacNeil.
Heather Hills
Heather Hills is Holly Hills' older sister. Rodrick has a crush on her. In the books, she's a minor character.
In the third movie, Dog Days, Heather is a main antagonist. She's spoiled, rude, and demanding. Rodrick's band, Löded Diper, plays at her sixteenth birthday party, but Rodrick messes up the decorations, and the party ends in disaster! She is played by Melissa Roxburgh.
Albert Sandy
Albert Sandy is a minor character who often talks about rumors he's heard. It's not clear if what he says is true.
Dennis Denard and Erick Glick
Dennis Denard and Erick Glick are two older students who run a business selling old homework and school projects. Dennis is the leader, and Erick is his public face. Greg almost bought a project from them but decided against it. They were later caught and given detention.
The Snellas
The Snellas are a family who used to live in the Heffleys' neighborhood. They have many sons, all with names starting with "S." They moved away because of a strange smell in their house, which was actually caused by Greg throwing deviled eggs into one of their plant pots!
Scotty Douglas
Scotty Douglas is a first grader from Rowley's karate class. In Rodrick Rules, Scotty was going to do a magic act with Rowley, but Greg had to fill in when Rowley broke his toe. Scotty looks a lot like Greg's comic character, Creighton The Cretin.
Mr. Underwood
Mr. Underwood is Greg's P.E. coach. In the movies, he's called Coach Malone and is played by Andrew McNee.
Bill Walter
Bill Walter is a 35-year-old unemployed high school dropout and guitarist. Rodrick looks up to him. Frank dislikes Bill and worries Rodrick will follow his path. In the movie version of Rodrick Rules, Bill joins Löded Diper but tries to kick Rodrick out.
Dr. Salazar Kagan
Dr. Kagan is Frank's dentist. He's very strict and scary. He once told Greg he needed headgear to fix his teeth. Greg later lost the headgear and found that Manny took it.
Mr. Huff
Mr. Huff is Greg's grumpy History teacher. He once had Rodrick as a student. In the movie version of Rodrick Rules, his name is Mr. Draybick and he's played by John Shaw.
Lenwood Heath
Lenwood Heath is a teenager who used to be Frank's rival. He was sent to military academy and became a well-behaved young man. Frank admired this and wanted to send Greg to the same academy!
Taylor Pringle
Taylor Pringle is a rude little girl who only appears in the movies. She once ruined Greg's birthday cake at a roller rink. Later, at a pool, she pressured Greg to jump off a high diving board, and when he did, she threw his swimsuit onto a fence! She is played by Dalila Bela.
Jordan Jury
Jordan Jury is a popular boy in the grade above Greg. He's known for throwing big parties without adult supervision. Greg was invited to one but couldn't go. It turned out Jordan only invited younger kids to use them as servants!
Angie Steadman
Angie Steadman only appears in the first Diary of a Wimpy Kid movie. She's in seventh grade and works for the school newspaper. She gets along with Rowley but has a rocky start with Greg. She is played by Chloë Grace Moretz.
Pete Hosey
Pete Hosey is the leader of the teenagers who attacked Greg and Rowley on Halloween in the first movie.
The Warrens
The Warrens are a family whose children are very athletic and sporty. Frank is a bit jealous of them. In the third movie, Mr. Warren is a neighbor and the troop master of the Wilderness Explorers.
The Beardos
The Beardos are the main antagonists in The Long Haul. They are a family with three sons. The Heffleys keep running into them on their road trip. Greg and his family think the Beardos stole their luggage at a water park, but it turns out Greg had the key to their locker all along! In the movie, they are much more mean.
Chris
Chris is a friend of Rodrick and the bassist for Löded Diper.
Joshie
Joshie is a singer famous in Europe and Rowley's favorite. Greg thinks Joshie's music is for much younger kids.
Maddox Selsam
Maddox Selsam is a boy who lives in the woods and isn't allowed any screen time. He plays with Legos and practices violin. Susan likes him because he doesn't have electronics and wants him to be a role model for Greg, but Maddox was rude to Greg.
Pets
Sweetie
Sweetie is a dog that Frank buys in Dog Days. Sweetie causes a lot of trouble in the Heffley house and is eventually given to Gramma. Sweetie gains a lot of weight at Gramma's house because she feeds him too many table scraps.
Greg and Rodrick's Fish
In "Dog Days", Greg buys a colorful angelfish, and Rodrick buys an "aggressive" piranha-like fish. Rodrick neglects his fish. When the family goes to a waterpark, Greg's mom puts Rodrick's fish in Greg's cleaner bowl. When they return, Rodrick's fish has eaten Greg's!
The Pig
The Pig is the Heffleys’ pet pig, named "Piggy" in the movie The Long Haul. Manny won it at a country fair. The Pig is very smart and acts almost human, even opening soda cans! In The Meltdown, The Pig throws a tantrum for being left out of a trip. Frank sends it to obedience school, but it escapes and is never seen again.
