List of New York State Historic Markers facts for kids
Have you ever seen a special sign on the side of the road that tells you about something important that happened there a long time ago? These signs are called New York State Historic Markers. They help us remember cool facts and stories about New York's past. There are more than 2,800 of these markers all over the state!
The idea for these markers started in 1926. This was to celebrate 150 years since the American Revolutionary War began. The program continued until 1966. The State History Office, which was part of the Department of Education, used to manage it.
Today, New York State does not have a special program for these markers. Instead, local towns and groups are in charge. They decide where new markers go, put them up, and keep them in good shape.
