Things That Haven't Happened Yet in the Super Bowl
Even after many Super Bowls, some things have never occurred:
- Snow: While it has rained during a Super Bowl, snow has never fallen during the game. This is mostly because the NFL chooses warm-weather cities or indoor stadiums for the event.
- An All-Wild Card Matchup: A "wild card" team is one that makes the playoffs without winning their division. While many wild card teams have reached the Super Bowl, two wild card teams have never played against each other in the big game.
- A Punt Return for a Touchdown: We've seen kickoff returns for touchdowns, but never a punt return for a score.
- A Shutout: Every team that has played in the Super Bowl has scored at least some points. No team has ever been held to zero points.
- Two Teams from the Same Metropolitan Area: Cities like New York (Giants, Jets) and Los Angeles (Chargers, Rams) have two NFL teams, but those teams have never faced each other in a Super Bowl.
- An Appearance by Every Team: Four teams have never reached the Super Bowl: the Cleveland Browns, Detroit Lions, Houston Texans, and Jacksonville Jaguars.
- Every Team Winning: 12 teams have played in the Super Bowl but have never won it. This includes the four teams mentioned above who have never even appeared in one.
- No Touchdowns Scored: Every Super Bowl has featured at least one touchdown. The fewest combined touchdowns in a game is one, in 2019.
- A "Three-Peat": No team has ever won three Super Bowls in a row. Some teams have come close, winning two in a row or three in four years, but never three straight.
