  • Mowgli – He's the main character of the stories. Mowgli is a boy who was raised by wolves, a panther named Bagheera, and a bear named Baloo. People often call him the "Man Cub."

Animal Friends and Foes

  • Bagheera – This sleek black panther is one of Mowgli's best friends and protectors. He's very wise and strong.
  • Baloo – A big, sleepy sloth bear who teaches Mowgli the important rules of the jungle. He's a kind and loyal friend.
  • Kaa – A giant Indian rock python. Kaa is very old and wise, and she's also one of Mowgli's mentors and friends. Some animals in the jungle are a bit scared of her amazing "hunger dance."
  • Hathi – The leader of the elephants. Hathi is a powerful Indian elephant who knows all the ancient laws of the jungle.
  • Shere Khan – A fierce Bengal tiger and the main bad guy. Shere Khan hates humans and sees himself as the true ruler of the jungle. He's very strong and sneaky.
  • Seeonee Wolf Pack – This is the Indian wolf pack that adopted Mowgli and raised him.
    • Akela – The wise and brave leader of the wolf pack.
    • Raksha – Also known as Mother Wolf, she is Mowgli's loving adoptive mother.
    • Rama – Also called Father Wolf, he is Mowgli's adoptive father.
    • Grey Brother – The oldest of Raksha and Father Wolf's wolf cubs. He's Mowgli's loyal brother.
  • Bandar-log – These are groups of grey monkeys. They are known for being silly and disorganized. They once kidnapped young Mowgli, but his friends rescued him.
  • Gajjini – Hathi's wife, an Indian elephant. In some movies, her name is Winifred.
  • Hathi Jr. – Hathi's son and a good friend to Mowgli. He's also an Indian elephant.
  • Tabaqui – A sneaky golden jackal who often hangs around Shere Khan. He sometimes acts as Shere Khan's spy. In some stories, he's a striped hyena.
  • Mang – A bat who lives in the jungle.
  • Rama – A large water buffalo that Mowgli helps to herd. Mowgli even rides him during a big fight with Shere Khan.
  • Chil – A kite (bird) (a type of bird of prey) who works as a messenger in the jungle.
  • Sahi – An Indian porcupine with sharp quills.
  • Tha – The oldest and first of the elephants, according to Hathi.
  • Thuu – A blind Indian cobra who guards treasure. Mowgli gives him a funny nickname because his fangs are old and don't work anymore.
  • Dholes – A pack of wild dogs that appear in one of the stories.
  • Jacala – A big Indian crocodile.
  • Mao – An Indian peacock.
  • Won-Tolla – A brave Indian wolf who warns Mowgli's pack about the dangerous dholes.
  • Chikai – A small rat.
  • Phao – An Indian wolf and the leader of a group called The Free People.
  • Phaona – Phao's father, also an Indian wolf.
  • Ferao – A scarlet woodpecker.

Human Characters

  • Messua – A kind woman from a human village who believes Mowgli might be her lost son. She adopts him.
  • Messua's husband – The richest man in the village and Messua's husband.
  • Nathoo – Messua and her husband's son, who was taken by a tiger a long time ago.
  • Buldeo – An old hunter from Messua's village. He likes to tell tall tales about the jungle and doesn't believe Mowgli knows more than him. In some movies, he's a British hunter.
  • Mowgli's wife – A woman who falls in love with Mowgli. In one movie, her name is Kitty Brydon.
  • Mowgli's son – The son of Mowgli and his wife.
