The New York City Marathon is a super famous long-distance running race held every year in New York City. It's about 26.2 miles (42.2 kilometers) long, which is the official distance for a marathon. This amazing race has been happening since 1970. It's the biggest marathon in the world, with over 50,000 people finishing almost every year since 2013!

The New York City Marathon is the largest marathon in the world.

From 1970 to 1975, the race was run entirely inside Central Park. But since 1976, the course starts in Staten Island and goes through all five of New York City's boroughs. The race was canceled in 2012 because of Hurricane Sandy, a big storm that hit New York just before the race. It was also canceled in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Many amazing runners have won the New York City Marathon. So far, 35 men and 30 women have won the main race. Also, nine men and seven women have won the wheelchair race. Winners have come from 22 different countries! Runners from America have won the most times (32 wins), followed by Kenya (26 wins), and Norway (10 wins).

Gary Muhrcke won the very first race in 1970, finishing in 2 hours, 31 minutes, and 38 seconds. There were 127 runners, and 55 of them finished. The only woman who started, Nina Kuscsik, had to stop because she felt sick. The next year, Beth Bonner became the first woman to finish the race, winning in 2 hours, 55 minutes, and 22 seconds. This was the first time a woman officially ran a marathon in under 3 hours!

A Norwegian runner named Grete Waitz was incredibly good. She set three official world records at the race between 1978 and 1980. She was the best female marathoner between 1978 and 1989, winning nine times! That's more than any other runner in the New York City Marathon. For the men, Bill Rodgers won four times in a row from 1976 to 1979.

The fastest times ever run on the current course are called "course records." For men, the record is 2 hours, 5 minutes, and 6 seconds, set by Geoffrey Mutai in 2011. For women, the record is 2 hours, 22 minutes, and 31 seconds, set by Margaret Okayo in 2003.

A special wheelchair race started in 2000, with 72 people finishing that year. Kamel Ayari won the men's wheelchair race, and Anh Nguyen Thi Xuan won the women's. In the wheelchair division, Edith Hunkeler from Switzerland and Tatyana McFadden from the United States have won the most times, with five victories each. Tatyana McFadden also holds the women's wheelchair course record (1 hour, 43 minutes, 4 seconds in 2015). Kurt Fearnley from Australia holds the men's wheelchair record (1 hour, 29 minutes, 22 seconds in 2006).
