Malaysia first joined the Olympic Games in 1956. Since then, Malaysian athletes have competed in almost every Summer Olympic Games. The only time they didn't was in 1980, when they joined a boycott. Malaysia also started competing in the Winter Olympic Games for the first time in 2018.

Malaysia's Olympic Journey

How Malaysia Started in the Olympics

Before Malaysia became one country, different parts of it competed separately. The area known as West Malaysia today was called the Federation of Malaya. It competed as Malaya (MAL) in the 1956 and 1960 Games.

The state of Sabah sent its own team in 1956, called North Borneo. Singapore also competed in the Olympics from 1948 to 1960.

Becoming Malaysia at the Games

In 1963, these British colonies joined together to form independent Malaysia. The country then competed under the name Malaysia for the first time at the 1964 Summer Olympics. Malaysia used the old code MAL until 1988. After that, they started using their current code, MAS.

Singapore later became independent from Malaysia in 1965. It started competing as Singapore again from 1968 onwards.

Malaysia's Olympic Medals

Winning Medals for Malaysia

Malaysian athletes have won a total of 15 Olympic medals so far. Most of these, 11 medals, are in badminton. They also won 2 medals in diving and 2 in cycling.

The first Malaysians to win Olympic medals were two brothers, Jalani Sidek and Razif Sidek. They won their medal in badminton at the 1992 Summer Olympics.

The Quest for Gold

Even with 15 medals, no Malaysian athlete has ever won a gold medal. This means Malaysia has won more Olympic medals than any other country without earning a gold.

The Olympic Committee

The group that organizes Malaysia's Olympic efforts is called the National Olympic Committee. It was first set up for Malaya in 1953. The International Olympic Committee officially recognized it in 1954. This committee later became the National Olympic Committee for all of Malaysia.
