The Maldives, a beautiful island nation, first joined the Olympic Games in 1988. Since then, they have sent athletes to compete in every Summer Olympic Games. However, the Maldives has never taken part in the Winter Olympic Games.

The National Olympic Committee for Maldives was created in 1985. The International Olympic Committee recognized it in the same year. Maldives made its Olympic debut at the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul, South Korea. Seven athletes competed in running events like sprints and the marathon. As of 2024, the Maldives has not yet won any Olympic medals.

Maldives Olympic Committee

The Maldives Olympic Committee was formed in 1985. It was recognized by the International Olympic Committee in the same year. This committee helps organize Maldives' participation in other big sports events. These include the Asian Games, Commonwealth Games, and South Asian Games. The current leader of the committee is Mohamed Abdul Sattar, who is the president. Thamooh Ahmed Saeed is the secretary general.

Maldives at the Summer Olympics

First Appearance: 1988 Seoul Olympics

The Maldives first competed at the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul, South Korea. Seven athletes took part in track and field events. For example, Ismail Asif Waheed ran in the 100 and 200-meter races. Ahmed Shageef competed in the 400-meter race. Two marathon runners, Abdul Haji Abdul Latheef and Hussein Haleem, did not finish their race. A team of four runners also competed in the 4 × 100-meter relay. They finished last in their heat and did not move on.

1992 Barcelona Olympics

In 1992, the Maldives sent seven athletes to the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona, Spain. Athletes like Ahmed Shageef and Hussein Haleem competed in track and field. Two swimmers, Ahmed Imthiyaz and Mohamed Rasheed, represented the nation in swimming.

1996 Atlanta Olympics

At the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta, United States, six athletes represented the Maldives. Five were track and field athletes, and one was a swimmer. Sprinters Mohamed Amir, Naseer Ismail, and Hussain Riyaz ran in different races. They also joined Ahmed Shageef in the men's marathon. Yaznee Nasheeda was the only female athlete. She competed in the women's 800-meter race. In swimming, Moosa Nazim took part in the men's 50-meter freestyle.

2000 Sydney Olympics

For the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney, Australia, the Maldives sent four athletes. This included two runners and two swimmers. Sprinters Naseer Ismail and Shamha Ahmed competed in the 800-meter and 100-meter races. Swimmers Hassan Mubah and Fariha Fathimath raced in the 50-meter freestyle events.

2004 Athens Olympics

Four athletes from the Maldives went to the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, Greece. Runners Sultan Saeed and Shifana Ali competed in the 100-meter and 400-meter races. Shifana Ali set a new national record in the 400-meter event. Hassan Mubah made his second Olympic appearance in swimming. Aminath Rouya Hussain also competed in the women's 50-meter freestyle.

2008 Beijing Olympics

The Maldives sent four athletes to the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, China. Two sprinters and two swimmers represented the country. Sprinter Ali Shareef set a national record in the men's 100-meter race. Aishath Reesha competed in the women's 800-meter race. Swimmers Ibrahim Shameel and Aminath Rouya Hussain took part in the 50-meter freestyle events.

2012 London Olympics

Five athletes from the Maldives competed at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, United Kingdom. Sprinters Azneem Ahmed and Afa Ismail ran in the 100-meter races. Azneem Ahmed achieved a national record with his time. Mohamed Ajfan Rasheed represented the Maldives in badminton. Swimmers Ahmed Husam and Aminath Shajan also competed.

2016 Rio Olympics

At the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, two sprinters and two swimmers represented the Maldives. Hassan Saaid won his first heat in the men's 100-meter race but was eliminated later. Sprinter Afa Ismail set a national record in the women's 200-meter race. Swimmers Nishwan Ibrahim and Aminath Shajan competed in freestyle events.

2020 Tokyo Olympics

The 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, Japan, were delayed to July 2021 because of the COVID-19 pandemic. The Maldives sent four athletes. Sprinter Hassan Saaid competed in the men's 100-meter race. Fathimath Nabaaha Abdul Razzaq took part in women's badminton. Swimmers Mubal Azzam Ibrahim and Aishath Sajina competed in freestyle and breaststroke events. None of the athletes advanced past the first round in their events.

Flagbearers for Maldives

Flag bearers are special athletes who carry their country's flag. They lead their team during the opening and closing ceremonies of the Olympic Games. The first flag bearer for the Maldives was Hussein Haleem, a sprinter, in 1988.
