History of Manchester Village

Manchester Village was first settled in 1761. For many years, especially in the mid-1800s, it was a busy crossroads village. This meant it was a place where different roads met, and travelers often stopped. Because of this, several taverns and inns were built here. The very first inn was built in 1769, on the same land where the Equinox House stands today.

After the American Revolutionary War, more people started moving to the area. Vermont became one of the fastest-growing states for a while. Later, another part of town, Manchester Center, grew to be more important for business.

However, Manchester Village found a new purpose. A man named Charles F. Orvis, who started the famous Orvis mail-order business, helped make the village a popular summer resort. He promoted it as a great place for people from New York to visit. Manchester Village was one of the very first places in New England to become a planned summer vacation spot.
