Changes to the District
Town Mergers
Over time, some towns in the Martigny district have joined together. On August 1, 1964, the towns of Martigny-Bourg and Martigny-Ville became one new town called Martigny. More recently, on January 1, 2021, the town of Charrat also merged into the municipality of Martigny.

Elections and Voting
In Switzerland, people vote for their leaders. In the 2007 federal election, which is a national election, many people in Martigny voted. The most popular political party was the Christian Democratic People's Party (CVP). They received about 30.87% of the votes. Other popular parties included the FDP.The Liberals, the Swiss People's Party (SVP), and the Social Democratic Party (SP). About 60.8% of eligible voters participated in this election.
People also vote for local and cantonal (state) leaders. In 2009, about 54.2% of voters participated in the election for the Conseil d'État (State Council). In 2007, about 61.0% of voters participated in the election for the Swiss Council of States.

According to the 2000 census, most people in Martigny are Roman Catholic, making up about 81.6% of the population. About 4.8% of the people belong to the Swiss Reformed Church. There are also smaller groups of people who are Orthodox Christian or belong to other Christian churches.
Some people in Martigny are Islamic, making up about 3.43% of the population. There are also small numbers of people who are Buddhist or Hindu. About 4.39% of the population said they did not belong to any church or religion.
