About Massimiliano Fuksas
Massimiliano Fuksas was born in Rome, Italy, in 1944. His father was from Lithuania, and his mother had French and Austrian family.
In the early 1960s, he worked with the artist Giorgio de Chirico in Rome. Later, he worked for other famous architects in London and Copenhagen. He studied architecture at La Sapienza University and graduated in 1969. He opened his first office, GRANMA, in Rome in 1967. He worked there with his first wife, Anna Maria Sacconi.
In 1985, he started working with his second wife, Doriana Mandrelli. She also became an architect in Paris in 2007. They opened more offices in Paris (1989) and Vienna (1993). Later, they added offices in Frankfurt (2002) and Shenzhen, China (2008).
One of their big projects is the new Terminal 3 at Shenzhen Bao'an International Airport. They designed and built it between 2008 and 2013. This building is a great example of using advanced computer design to create a large and unique structure.
Massimiliano and Doriana Fuksas have two daughters, Elisa and Lavinia.
From 1994 to 1997, Fuksas helped plan cities in Berlin and Salzburg. He has always been very interested in how cities grow and change. Especially, he focused on areas outside the main city centers.
Since 2000, he has written about architecture for a weekly magazine called L'Espresso. In 2000, he was the director of a big architecture event. It was the 7th International Architecture Exhibition at the Venice Biennale. The theme was "Less Aesthetics, More Ethics."
He also teaches at several universities. These include the École spéciale d'architecture in Paris and Columbia University in New York.
