In winter, Mayrhofen becomes a paradise for skiing and snowboarding. The town is located between two large mountains, the Penken and the Ahorn. These mountains offer many ski runs for all skill levels, from easy slopes for beginners to challenging ones for experts.

Ahorn Mountain: This mountain mainly has easy and medium-difficulty ski runs. It also has a very long and steep black run. This run was once part of the World Cup Downhill races, but it was removed because it was considered too dangerous.
Penken Mountain: The Penken mountain is home to Austria's steepest ski slope, called Harakiri. It also has a wide variety of ski runs with different difficulty levels. You can reach other villages like Finkenberg, Lanersbach, and Schwendau from Penken using ski lifts.

Mayrhofen is also a great spot for snowboarders. It has a special funpark sponsored by Vans. There's even a snowboard hotel called Gasthof Zillertal, run by a Dutch group called 'SAIKO expeditions'.

Year-Round Glacier Skiing

Near Mayrhofen, you'll find the Hintertux glacier. This glacier is very high up, at 3,250 meters (about 10,660 feet) above sea level. Because it's so high, it's always covered in snow. This means you can go skiing there all year round, even in summer!

Each spring, usually in early April, Mayrhofen hosts a big music festival called Snowbombing. This festival started in 2000 and has become very famous in the world of electronic dance music. Mayrhofen has been the host city for Snowbombing since 2005, drawing many music fans to the slopes.

Getting Around Mayrhofen

Mayrhofen has a convenient railway station right next to the main road, the Zillertaler Bundestrasse. This station is the end point for all train services run by the Zillertalbahn. The Zillertalbahn is the main public transport company in the valley.

The railway line runs between Jenbach and Mayrhofen. Along the way, there are several stops that give you access to many well-known ski areas. These include Zell am Ziller (for Zillertal 3000), Fügen (for Spieljoch), and Uderns (for the Hochfügen and Kaltenbach ski areas). The trains run all year. In summer, they even have special services, like a fun steam train ride!
