Millicent is a friendly town in the Australian state of South Australia. It is located about 399 kilometers (248 miles) south-east of Adelaide, the state capital. It's also about 50 kilometers (31 miles) north of Mount Gambier. In 2021, about 4,760 people lived here.

Millicent has many interesting places to visit. These include the Millicent National Trust Museum and the Millicent Library & Gallery. You can also find the Millicent Civic & Arts Centre here. Nearby, you can explore the Tantanoola Caves Conservation Park. The beautiful Canunda National Park is also close by.

Not far from town is Lake Bonney SE. This lake is home to South Australia's biggest wind turbine farm. Millicent also has its own special lake, Lake McIntyre. This lake is man-made and a great spot for nature lovers. It's home to many different birds and other wildlife. You can walk around Lake McIntyre in about 20 minutes. Over 50 types of water birds and waders live there.

A Look at Millicent's Past

Millicent became an official town in 1870. It grew on a limestone ridge in the middle of the Millicent flats. These flats had recently been drained. The town was named after Millicent Glen. She was the wife of an early pioneer. Her father was Augustus Short, the first Anglican Bishop of Adelaide.

Millicent is also home to a large paper mill. This factory is owned by Kimberly-Clark Australia. It is located about 10 kilometers (6 miles) from the town. The mill is the biggest employer in the area. It has around 400 people working there. They make popular products like Kleenex, Cottonelle, and Viva. These products are sold in Australia and some other countries.

The town is also known for its farming. Many different crops are grown here. Large areas are covered with pine and blue gum trees. Millicent is also unique because it has the only seaweed harvesting and processing plant in South Australia.

Millicent used to be on the Mount Gambier and Rivoli Bay railway line. This railway was built in 1879. In 1959, the railway line was shortened to Millicent. The part between Millicent and Mount Gambier was changed in the mid-1950s. It was no longer used for freight after April 1995. Passenger tourist services ran briefly from 1998 to 1999.

Sports and Fun in Millicent

Millicent has many sports clubs for young people.

The Millicent Bandits baseball club has junior and senior teams. They play in the Mount Gambier and District Baseball League. Some junior players from the Bandits have played at the state level. They have also competed in the national Little League competition.

The Millicent football and netball clubs are called the Saints. They play in the Western Border Football League. Their team colors are red, white, and black. These are the same colors as the St Kilda Football Club in the AFL.
