Olumiye Dimolu "Miye" Oni (born August 4, 1997) is a professional basketball player. He plays for Joventut Badalona in Spain. Miye also plays in the EuroCup competition. He played college basketball for the Yale Bulldogs. Miye is known for playing the shooting guard position. In 2019, he was named the best player in the Ivy League. He was chosen for the All-Ivy League team three times.

Miye Oni has Nigerian family roots. He grew up in Northridge, Los Angeles. He started playing high school basketball at Viewpoint School. There, he was named the best player in his division. At first, not many colleges were interested in him. He planned to go to Williams College. But after his senior year, more colleges noticed him. He then decided to play for Yale. Because of college rules, he played one more year of prep basketball. This was at Suffield Academy before starting at Yale.

Miye Oni's Early Life

Miye Oni was born to Opeyemi and Oludotun Oni. His parents are from Nigeria. His father is an engineer and a professor. Miye started playing basketball when he was only two years old. He used a toy hoop at home. At age five, he joined a league with his older sister. From a young age, he dreamed of playing in the National Basketball Association (NBA). He really looked up to Kobe Bryant of the Los Angeles Lakers. Besides basketball, Miye also played football and baseball. In football, he mostly played as a safety and wide receiver.

High School Basketball Journey

Miye Oni began his freshman year at Sierra Canyon School. This school is in Chatsworth, California. But he soon moved to Viewpoint School in Calabasas, California. He joined the junior varsity team in his first year. At that time, he was about 5 feet 9 inches tall. He weighed around 140 pounds. In his second year, he did not play basketball. He wanted to focus on his schoolwork.

As a junior, Miye hurt his knee. This injury kept him from playing for most of the season. It also made it harder for colleges to see him play. He did not have many videos for coaches to watch. By his senior year, Miye had grown to 6 feet 4 inches. He weighed about 180 pounds. He had a fantastic final season at Viewpoint. He scored 18 points per game. He also got 9 rebounds and 4 assists per game. He was named the best player in his division.

Choosing a College Team

At Viewpoint, Miye did not get offers from top basketball programs. Only smaller colleges showed interest. He first decided to go to Williams College. But his family found it hard to afford the costs. During his senior year, an assistant coach from Yale saw him play. After watching his videos, Yale's head coach offered him a spot. Miye committed to Yale in July 2015.

However, Yale's admissions were closed at that time. So, Miye spent another year playing prep school basketball. He went to Suffield Academy in Connecticut. This school is close to Yale University.

At Suffield, Miye continued to play very well. He averaged 17 points, 6 rebounds, and 5 assists. He was named the best player in his league. In one game, he scored an amazing 52 points. He also made 11 three-pointers. This broke a school record. He was even considered for the 2016 McDonald's All-American Boys Game.

College Basketball Career

Freshman Year at Yale

Miye Oni played his first game for Yale on November 13, 2016. He scored 24 points, which was the most on his team. He also had 6 rebounds and 3 assists. Yale won the game against Washington. In his next game, he scored 13 points and grabbed 10 rebounds. He also blocked 5 shots.

Miye was named the Ivy League Rookie of the Week three times in a row. Later in the season, he scored a season-high 27 points. He also had 7 rebounds and 4 assists. By the end of his first year, Miye averaged 12.9 points per game. He also got 6.3 rebounds and 2.7 assists. He was chosen for the second-team All-Ivy League. He won Rookie of the Week five times that season.

Sophomore Year Highlights

Before his second season, people thought Miye and his teammate Makai Mason would be a top duo. In his third game, Miye scored 20 points. He helped Yale win against South Carolina State. He later scored a season-best 26 points against Vermont. He also led his team with 7 rebounds and 4 assists.

In February 2018, Miye almost got a "triple-double." He scored 26 points, had 9 rebounds, and 8 assists. He led Yale in all three areas. For the season, he averaged 15.1 points, 6.0 rebounds, and 3.6 assists. He also tied a school record for three-pointers attempted. Miye was named Ivy League Player of the Week three times. He was also chosen for the first-team All-Ivy League.

Junior Year and NBA Attention

Miye started his junior season in November 2018. He scored 16 points in a game in Shanghai, China. Later, he got his first "double-double" of the season. He had 18 points and 10 rebounds. In December, Miye scored 29 points and was named the game's MVP.

In February 2019, he had an amazing game. He scored 31 points, grabbed 9 rebounds, and made 4 assists. He was the first Yale player to score 30 points since 2017. In his next game, he scored a career-high 35 points. He also had 12 rebounds and 3 blocks. This was the most points scored by a Yale player since 2012. Miye helped Yale win games and get a spot in the Ivy League tournament.

By the end of his junior year, Miye was averaging 17.4 points. He also had 6.3 rebounds and 3.6 assists. He was named the Ivy League Men's Basketball Player of the Year. He was only the third Yale player to win this award.

During his junior season, NBA scouts often came to watch Miye play. He was seen as one of the top 50 players for the 2019 NBA draft. He became the first Ivy League player to be drafted since 1995. Even Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski thought he would be a first-round pick.

Professional Basketball Career

Utah Jazz (2019–2022)

On June 20, 2019, Miye Oni was chosen in the 2019 NBA draft. The Golden State Warriors picked him as the 58th player. But his draft rights were then traded to the Utah Jazz. This made Miye the first Ivy League player drafted since 1995. He was also the first Yale player picked since 1987. The Utah Jazz signed Miye on July 15, 2019.

He was sent to the Salt Lake City Stars to start the NBA G League season. In January 2020, he scored a season-high 28 points for the Stars. The Salt Lake City Stars had a record-breaking season. They won 14 games in a row. Miye averaged 12.7 points, 6.1 rebounds, and 4 assists.

Later in his first year, Miye started playing for the Jazz. This happened because some players were injured. On August 7, 2020, Miye started his first NBA game. He scored a career-high 14 points and had 7 rebounds.

In his second year with the Jazz, Miye played more often. He filled in when other guards were injured. He played in 54 of the 72 regular season games. The Jazz had the best record in the league that season. Miye played important minutes in the 2022 NBA Playoffs. He even guarded Paul George of the Los Angeles Clippers.

In his third season, Miye played less due to new players joining the team. In January 2022, he was traded to the Oklahoma City Thunder. Three days later, he was released. In February 2022, Miye signed a short-term contract with the New Orleans Pelicans. He also played for the Dallas Mavericks in the 2022 NBA Summer League.

London Lions (2022–2023)

On November 16, 2022, Miye Oni signed with the London Lions. This team plays in the British Basketball League. He was the fourth former NBA draft pick to join the Lions that year. The Lions made history in their first EuroCup season. They became the first British club to reach the EuroCup Playoffs.

Osceola Magic (2023–2024)

On October 13, 2023, Miye Oni signed with the Orlando Magic. He was released five days later. On November 2, he joined the Osceola Magic. In September 2024, Miye signed with the Memphis Grizzlies. He was released in October.

Joventut Badalona (2024–Present)

On December 16, 2024, Miye Oni signed with Joventut Badalona. This team plays in the Liga ACB in Spain.

Playing for Nigeria's National Team

Miye Oni can play for the Nigeria men's national basketball team. This is because his mother was born there. He played for Nigeria at the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo. He played a lot of minutes in the games. He even made the winning shot when Nigeria beat the United States men's national basketball team. This was in a game before the Olympics started.

Miye played in all three games in Tokyo. He started in two of them. He played about 21.8 minutes per game, which was second on his team. Against Germany, he made 5 of 6 three-point shots. He finished that game with 15 points.

At Yale University, Miye Oni studied political science. He was praised for doing well in his studies. A Yale basketball coach said Miye's teammates respected his hard work in school. After being drafted into the NBA, Yale allowed him to finish his degree.

Helping Children in Need

Miye Oni is an ambassador for Connecticut CASA. CASA stands for Court Appointed Special Advocates. This group helps children who have experienced abuse or neglect. Miye also worked with Utah CASA.
