How Did Mount Lukens Get Its Name?
This mountain was named after a man named Theodore Lukens. He used to be in charge of the Angeles National Forest. Later, he even became the mayor of Pasadena, California.
Before it was called Mount Lukens, the mountain had another name: Sister Elsie Peak. People say that Sister Elsie was a Catholic nun. The story goes that she died while taking care of people who were sick during a smallpox epidemic. On a map from the U.S. Forest Service in 1925, the mountain was shown as Mount Lukens, but it also said "Sister Elsie Peak" underneath. We don't know for sure who Sister Elsie was, and the stories about her haven't been fully proven.
