^ A: Movement Party, along with Resistance Party, was a major monarchist party during the July Monarchy period. The Movement Party were more conservative compared to the progressive Republicans (centre-left/left-wing), but were more progressive/moderate than the centre-right Resistance Party.

The Movement Party (which in French was called Parti du Mouvement) was a political group in France. They were active during a time called the July Monarchy. This was a period when France had a king, Louis Philippe I, from 1830 to 1848.

The party believed in liberalism, which means they wanted more freedom and rights for people. They were seen as a "centre-left" group. This means they were more progressive than some other parties. They were also "monarchists," meaning they supported having a king. But they wanted the king to have less power. They wanted a stronger parliamentary system, where elected representatives make the laws.

History of the Movement Party

The Movement Party was started by Jacques Laffitte. He was a banker who supported the July Revolution of 1830. This revolution brought King Louis Philippe to power. The King asked Laffitte to lead the government. But Laffitte's government only lasted six months. This was because the King became more traditional over time.

The party members believed in the Charter of 1830. This was like a constitution. They saw it as a step towards a more democratic country. They wanted to expand suffrage, which means more people should be allowed to vote. They also supported self-determination. This means countries should be free to decide their own future.

Adolphe Thiers and Party Leadership

After Laffitte, Adolphe Thiers became a main leader of the party. Thiers was close to the King. He became the Minister of the Interior. This job is like being in charge of the country's internal affairs. As Minister, Thiers had to deal with the Canut revolts in 1834. These were protests by silk workers. He also supported strict laws after an attempt to assassinate King Louis Philippe.

Thiers became Prime Minister twice. These were short periods in 1836 and 1840. But his political luck changed. He supported an Egyptian leader named Muhammad Ali of Egypt. Muhammad Ali wanted to be independent from the Ottoman Empire. This caused problems with other powerful countries like the United Kingdom and Prussia.

The Party in Opposition

After this, the Movement Party was often in the opposition. This means they were not part of the government. They joined with other groups who disagreed with the King's more conservative governments. The party held many public meetings. These meetings were called Campagne des banquets. They used these events to push for more people to get the right to vote.

The party ended after the tensions of 1848. These tensions led to the French Revolution of 1848. This revolution caused King Louis Philippe to lose his throne. It also led to the creation of the Second French Republic. Many members of the Movement Party then joined other groups. Some became Moderate Republicans. Others joined a new group called the Party of Order.
