History of Nakhodka
How Nakhodka Bay Was Discovered
The Nakhodka Bay is where the city is built. Russians first learned about this bay in 1859. A ship called the Amerika found shelter there during a big storm.
Because the bay was free of ice and calm, they named it Nakhodka. This Russian word means "discovery" or "lucky find," which was perfect for how they found it.
From Settlement to City
A small settlement was set up here from 1868 to 1872, but it was later left empty. For many years, the area around the bay was not lived in.
In the 1930s, the Soviet government decided to build a harbor in this area. This led to several small villages being started. These villages grew and joined together.
By 1950, the settlement had about 28,000 people. On May 18, 1950, it officially became a city.
How Nakhodka Is Organized
Nakhodka is an important city in Primorsky Krai. It is set up as a "City Under Krai Jurisdiction," which means it has a special status, similar to a district.
For local government, Nakhodka is known as the "Nakhodkinsky Urban Okrug." This is how the city manages its own local affairs.
Geography and Climate
