This article lists the biggest cities and towns in Russia. It includes places with more than 50,000 people, based on the official count from the 2021 Census. The numbers show how many people live right inside the city limits, not in the larger surrounding areas.

Some cities on this list, like Sevastopol and places in the Republic of Crimea, are included based on the Russian census. It's important to know that many countries around the world still see Crimea as part of Ukraine. Also, some parts of big cities like Moscow (like Zelenograd) and parts of St. Petersburg are not listed separately here. The 16 largest cities in Russia are home to about 24% of the country's total population.

Cities and Towns by Population

This section shows a list of cities and towns in Russia, ordered by how many people live there.

  • Cities shown in bold are the main cities (capitals) of their region, called a federal subject.
  • Some capitals are quite small and don't make this list. For example, Naryan-Mar has about 25,795 people.
  • Cities shown in grey are in areas that Russia has taken over. Many countries do not agree with Russia's claim to these areas.
