History of Neiva

Neiva has a long and interesting history. It was founded three times before finding its current home.

Early Foundations of Neiva

The city was first started in 1539 by Juan de Cabrera. This was in an area that is now the municipality of Campoalegre.

Later, in 1550, Juan de Alonso y Arias moved the city. He moved it to where the municipality of Villavieja is today. However, local tribes destroyed the city in 1560.

Neiva's Final Location

The city was founded for the third and final time in 1612. Diego de Ospina y Medinilla chose its current location. This is where Neiva stands today.

Neiva's Importance in Colonial Times

Neiva became very important during the time of Spanish rule. It was a key stop on the trade route. This route connected the Viceroyalty of Peru with big cities like Bogotá and Caracas.

The city was made the capital of the Province of Neiva. This province included several local councils. In 1905, Neiva became the capital of the new Huila Department. This department was created from the Tolima Department.

Major Events in Neiva's History
