North Dome is a mountain found in Greene County, New York. It is part of the famous Catskill Mountains. North Dome is located between two other mountains: West Kill Mountain to its east and Mount Sherrill to its west.

About North Dome

North Dome is one of the many beautiful mountains in the Catskill Mountains range. It stands tall in Greene County, New York. The mountain is known for its natural beauty and its role in the local environment.

Where the Water Goes

North Dome is part of the watershed of the Hudson River. A watershed is an area of land where all the water drains into a common river, lake, or ocean. For North Dome, all the rain and snowmelt eventually flow into the Hudson River, which then empties into New York Bay.

The water from the northern side of North Dome flows into the West Kill stream. This happens through smaller streams like Hagadone Brook and Bennett Brook. From the West Kill, the water travels into Schoharie Creek, then into the Mohawk River, and finally into the Hudson River.

Water from the southern side of North Dome takes a different path. It flows into Esopus Creek, which also eventually joins the Hudson River. This shows how all the water from the mountain is connected to a much larger river system.

Exploring the Mountain

North Dome is located within the Westkill Mountain Wilderness Area. This area is part of New York's Catskill State Park, which protects a lot of natural land.

Unlike some other mountains, North Dome does not have a marked hiking trail to its top. This means there isn't a clear path for hikers to follow. People who want to reach the summit usually have to "bushwhack." Bushwhacking means making your own way through dense woods and bushes without a trail.

Most people start their climb from Spruceton Road. However, it's important to know that the only way to reach the very top of North Dome involves crossing private land. This land belongs to a nearby summer camp. Always remember to respect private property and get permission if you need to cross someone's land.
